Hey guys. I need to find a replacement for my 9800gt 512mb video card in my desktop because it has failed. I do not have much knowledge of the new video cards available today. I would like to find a video card that is equivalent to the 9800 gt. It would be nice if it could handle most games (e.g., Guild Wars, Call of Duty, Skyrim, etc.) at medium settings. The main use of this computer is photo editing with photoshop though.

Here are the exact specifications of my desktop:

I've been looking at the Nvidia Geforce GTS 450 1GB video card but I am worried that it will use to much power as this desktop only has a 400w power supply. I'm willing to upgrade to a 550-600w power supply for $30-50 as that is what I have found some going for. Maybe this video card is more powerful than what I need it for.

A single slot video card is a must I think because there is not a whole lot of space to put a big 2 slot video card in it.

Here are some I found but not sure if it is a good replacement:

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131440

$110 is the most I'll pay for a video card as I am not going to be using it much but need to replace my old card. $60-90 is a more desirable price range.

Thanks

You've got the only two good choices within your price range already.

The GTS 450 would be a better choice. The power draw on the specs of the GTS 450 is only 1 watt more than the 9800GT, but it draws it's power through 1 connector instead of 2. That shouldn't be an issue for a 400W power supply because I think they would only have one 12V rail. If it has multiple 12V rails and both of the connectors that were used for the 9800GT were from different rails, it would be a problem. You can tell if your power supply has multiple 12V rails from the sticker that should be on it, it would say the amperage for each rail and would list multiple 12V ones. You might have to unscrew it from your case to read it.

The HD 6670 is decent. It's not as good as the GTS 450 but you would definitely be able to run that because it draws all it's power from the motherboard only. I have the 5670 in my computer which the 6670 is basically just a rebrand of with slightly higher specs. It can run most games on high settings. I don't have guild wars, or skyrim, but I've played MW2 and it runs well at the highest graphics at 1920x1080.

If you were to upgrade your power supply, a 6770 would be a better choice, it would be better than the GTS 450.

No cards are really only 1 slot anymore. The fans on them are pretty massive and it will take up two slots whether or not it has a cover for the 2nd slot.

Thanks Mike,

Yeah my main concern was the power supply and your info helped me out a lot. I almost bought a new power supply but I think the current one should suffice. Here is the video card I ended up buying:

It was $100 with $10 shipping but I got a $20 rebate card so I think I got a good deal. It has good reviews also. I also found out that a two slot video card can fit inside my desktop but it's just a little crowded. This one will fit though.
