Beginer programer

Well for the past year or two i've been experimenting with html, css, javascript etc and have gotten to know them and im now thinking about learning some programming skills except..to be truthful i have no idea were to start. There are so many different programing languages i don't know which would be best to start looking into and learning. So i figured i'd ask for your opinions.

If you're gunna mention one could you also please state it's advantages and disadvantages so i can get an idea of it's capability's. Thanks!

Im learning website coding right now in college..typical that i already know that. And should be moving onto some programming next year. I just want a head start cause im getting interested in it and figured i'd check it out.

i guess you can go with HTML. it's quite simple and you can do it on notepad

Since you have the basic concept of Javascript, I would suggest you go into a few options:
For webdeveloping - PHP, perhaps the most popular server side programing language at this moment. PHP is very useful and self-explanatory, easy to install on your computer. In other words "You can pick it up right away." AJAX can be also good if you understand Javascript and then you can mix it with PHP/mySQL. AJAX is bascially all about not loading another page whenever updating content.
Else, C++ and Java are right now considered to be very useful. As far as I know, C++ syntax is similar to PHP and is the best in my opinion in the C languages. Many programs you see are C++ programmed. Java some people say it's slow which is quite true, but can be a very good language to work with.
Finally, if you just want to play around and do some little fun tricks, Flash is always the best wat to go. I don't think i need to explain much on Flash.
I'll leave the final decision to you.

JAVA is a good language to start with, it teaches good programming practices. Then you can branch off to C++ and later assembly

But HTML is not programming, PHP and Javascript are web scripting.

I like perl, not that I know much, but i like it. Its for writing cgi files.

I suppose c++ would be the most usefull way to go. As they use it for actual programs, not web-things. Not that I know much about that either.

Anymore are welcome, i heard c++ and java are pretty hard to pick up for a beginner but i'll look into those i've heard a bit about perl to.

I would and have started with Visual Basic its pretty easy to get started with it.

Basic is nice because once you know one, you know them all. Darkbasic, qbasic, vbasic, basica, etc.

On the other hand its really not efficient, and incredibly easy to learn; it won't get you very far competitively, if that's what you're lookign at. I suggest learning a more complex laguage, but starting with the simpler functions, most of which resemble basic but give a more specific grasp of the language.
