We were in Chem, and my friend and I were so bored we decided to tether his iPhone 4. Let me tell you this, it is the most FRUSTRATING THING EVER on Windows. (A few days later, he bought a MacBook Pro, and ****, it was easy!)
So if you're on Windows you have to obviously turn on Bluetooth on both the phone and the laptop. (I don't know the USB method, we gave up with that when it didn't work plugging in and didn't work googling the method on his phone)
So just get to the Tethering screen in the Settings menu on your phone, and turn it on, choose Bluetooth I guess :/
Then go to the Bluetooth screen and stay there. On Windows, go in the Control Panel, under Bluetooth settings and choose to Set Up a Bluetooth Device. Follow the instructions (I hope you stayed at that screen!) Once you tether, you should see the Blue notification lightup thing (like when you're multitasking in a call, but BLUE!).
On a Mac, I think it's turn Bluetooth on for both devices, and choose the Bluetooth menu on the notification panel and set up your phone. I remember it being significantly easier than Windows. After the first time, just turn on Bluetooth for both devices and choose your phone from the menu, very easy.
One thing to note for your convenience is if you're on Windows, after you've set up your phone, just make a shortcut to the desktop from the Bluetooth devices folder. That way you can just enable both devices' Bluetooth and double click the shortcut to connect.
Sorry I couldn't explain the USB method, but I think you can Google that!
