Macromedia Fireworks MX is the best.
Adobe Photoshop 7.0 (CS version is rubbish) is good for noob artists.
Autocad 3ds is good for what it's name is (3d images) provided you spent two years learning.

i actually disagree, imageready which comes with photoshop i feel is the best for gifs, i used to use flash, but i hate flash, so i now use imageready, call me a noob if you wish lol

I read some article on a pc-pro website where a GFX expert benchedmarked several image making software and Fireworks (MX04) came top so my above post wasn't actually on my own-opionion :P

As far as gifs go imageready cs is the best. i3, what you said about version 7/CS is just wrong. I have 7 on my home pc and CS on the macs at my course. CS is MILES better.
Flash is only really good for swfs, using it for gifs is a waste.

I've made a self-mod script (in c#) for PS7 for vectors and it worked fine but CS just totally screws up here and there with mods.

jasc animation shop 3 I would say would be the best because its simple and everyone can use it you have to be pretty skilled to use MX and what not and I just like using Jasc for basic but if I need to go into detail MX works great

I use Imageready..the tween button is a very useful tool for animations.
