Well as long as they're your first shots... :?

Well okay, the first thing you want to do is create a good background, so people have something to look at. Something with detail, and something creative. If you're looking to create just plain signatures, you can always download grungestract/fractal brushes to create some detail to your backgrounds. Mainly you can get brushes off DeviantART, try looking there, if not anything you're looking for, go with Gimp Talk.

Second thing you want to focus on after that is colour. Usually you don't want to do anything bright. Avoid yellow, or if in certain cases, I dunno. If you're doing a grunge background I'd usually go with a dark colour, dark blue to green maybe. Or if you would want even try to contrast in your colours, using complimentary colours and such. Or on a gradient scale from regular blue to dark blue, something like that.

Third thing is finding a render, and making it blend. Usually I wouldn't go with anime renders. They don't fit grunge or fractal signatures. Quite frankly I don't know why people use them when they don't really look good on alot of things.. In any case you want to something that fits the signature. But more importantly fix the render's lighting so that it fits the background. After you place it I would blur around the edges of it with a fuzzy cirlce brush.

Last thing, text. Text is one of the harder things to do. Finding good colours, fonts, making it fit, etc. I don't do alot. You don't want to make it stand out, but you do want to make it so that the colours blend, and so that it doesn't draw alot of attention away from the signature. Type your text, with your font and colour (preferably white), and then duplicate it a few times and mess around with the layer modes and filters. Gaussian blur the back layers or mess around plainly. You need to find a good thing to suit a signature.

Lastly, a border. Not many people believe in black borders, they're a bit *too* simple. Create a new layer, select all, shrink by how many ever pixels you want, then, invert, fill with a colour, and set the layer mode to whatever you want it to be. And voila, that's your border. Mess around with some layer modes until you get an effect you want.

Hopefully my tips helped. :?
