you could try some blending effects, i think you already did, but most of the time pattern overlay isn't the best option. OR at least in my opinion

I'm trying to figure out ice text right now, I can do flame and engraved text (i used engraved text in this one)

yeah, sometimes sleek and simple work best, is the backround allows it you can even put on a slight bevel and emboss (or a outer glow SOMETIMES).. and turn the FILL not OPACITY to 0% and the effect will still be there.... Its pretty cool
