It will use email to notify you when there is a reply after you click the "Watch this topic".
And you can choose to let it send email for all the topics you posted in whenever it has reply by going to the profile page and checking
"Always notify me of replies:
Sends an e-mail when someone replies to a topic you have posted in. This can be changed whenever you post."
