What gear has the best magic defense?

Please list the top three magic defense sets because I probably won't be able to afford the number one set.

Thanks

Well the best "budget setup" and what I used to use is:

Mystic hat (any color)
Black d'hide top
void legs
mystic boots
barrows gloves (RFD)
ring doesnt matter
saradomin/elemental book
fury/glory

It's an ok setup but probably not the best. It's quite good on a budget though.

Best > Worst

Neitiznot helm
Fire cape (+11) > Mage Arena Cape (+10) > Skill cape (+9)
Amulet of Fury > Amulet of Glory > Stole (high prayer bonus if desired)
Karil's top (+65) > Black D'hide top > Armdayl chestplate (+70, but -7 to all melee attack bonuses, higher ranged)
Karil's skirt (+35) > Black D'hide chaps > Armadyl plateskirt (+40, but -6 to all melee attack bonuses, higher ranged)
Barrows gloves > Black D'hide vambraces
Ranger Boots = Snakeskin Boots (both +2) > Dragon Boots (strength bonus with non-negative magic defence)
Dragonfire shield (+10) > Mind Shield (+9) > Holy Book (+8) > Elemental Shield (+6) > Book of Balance (+4) > Anti-dragon shield (+2)
Seers' Ring (+4, but not really necessary, use a ring of wealth/life)

Depends what you're killing as to what offensive bonuses you need - i.e. if you're ranging then you'll want to take armadyl over black dragonhide or karil's if possible, but if you're meleeing then karil's is better.

Edit: Didn't even realise the fire cape had a magic defence bonus. :o Credit to Jasonmrc for that.

Void bottoms actually have +2 more magic defense than the black d'hide bottoms, that's why I recommended them over the d'hide. They're just not as convenient to get.

I find the best setups are the ones I create, not the ones others' use. Try looking through the RSM and building your own setup.

Do you want Highest Magic defense? Or best Magic defense for combat? There is a difference.

(best first, lesser last)
For Mage Defense:
Armadyl Helm or Bear Helm (From Mountain Daughter quest)
Amulet of Fury or Amulet of Defense
Fire Cape or Mage Arena God Cape
Armadyl chestplate or Karil's top
Armadyl Legs or Karil's skirt
Third age vamps or Black D hide vamps or 'Barrows' RFD gloves
Seers ring or Lunar Ring
Wizard boots or Ranger boots or Lunar boots
DragonFire Shield(any number of charges = 10 mage def) or Mind Shield or Holy Book

(Depends on why you're fighting what you're fighting)
For Mage Defense for combat:
Neitznot Helm or Slayer Helm or Armadyl Helm
Amulet of Fury or Amulet of Glory or Amulet of Defense
Fire Cape or Cape of Accomplishment or Mage Arena God Cape
Armadyl chestplate or Karil's top
Armadyl Legs or Karil's skirt
Third age vamps or Black D hide vamps or 'Barrows' RFD gloves
Seers ring or Lunar Ring or Slayer ring or Ring of Exploration
Wizard boots or Ranger boots or Metallic boots(Dragon boots)
DragonFire Shield(any number of charges = 10 mage def) or Mind Shield or Holy Book or Book of Balance

It mainly depends on what you're fighting. If you're fighting a slayer assignment then you'll want a Slayer Helmet (not a black mask as those actually have a -3 mage defense). If you're fighting a creature with a Magical-Melee attack then you'd rather Armadyl/Black D hide armor over Karil's(Armadyl/D Hide has better melee def). You also might rather Dragon boots over Wizard boots(D boots give +4 str and wizard boots give +4 mage def).

Black dragonhides and overall most dragonhides are awesome defence, remember if you wear magic gear you get magic def bonus for example mystic bottoms offers a good magic attack bonus but it also offers a good defence from magic bonus, also you might consider splitbark cause its ggood for magic and mellee defences.
