what is the best item to use in the left hand of the equipment slot for mageing?

That really depends on what you are maging. If you aren't getting hit much, then the Zammy book is the best. It offers the highest attack bonus. When I am not using that, I use the mirror shield. It has the best def with no mage penalty.

Occasionally when I get a higher level slayer task, I mage with a rune kite. I still hit effectively, and the def bonus stops a ton of hits.

the highest magic boost on a shield comes from the mage's book. it gives +15 or +20 (forget :S) in both magic attack and defense. if you are safe-spotting, or some other method that prevents you from getting hit, this is the best to use. current cost: 3.7m. it was climbing in price very rapidly, but as of a few days ago it started to go back down.

for those of you who aren't multimilionairs, the next best option would be the unholy book from the "horror from the deep" quest. once you purchase and fill all 4 pages of the book, it aquires +8 bonus to all accuracies and +5 prayer bonus. the book itself is free with the quest, but the pages, if you don't earn them yourself, will cost you 683k alltogether.

if you are still too poor to buy the zamorak pages, your next best item is the book of balance. obtained the same way as the unholy book, once its pages are in it gives +4 to all accuracy and defense, and +5 prayer bonus. its much cheaper though, because most people don't like guthix for some reason, even though he is leet (H). the pages for the guthix book will only cost you 70k. yeah, thats almost 1/10 the cost of the zamorak book :S

ok, if you are really freaking ridiculously poor, you have one more option: a broodoo shield. you can either make one (which requires you go kill a broodoo victem in tai bwo wannai cleanup minigame) or buy one. i don't think they sell really, but all of them, with any charge amount, will only cost you up to 4k. pretty cheap. and it gives +3 magic attack and +5 prayer. pretty good for being so cheap.

if you make a broodoo shield, you will need a broodoo mask from a broodoo victem as mentioned above, as well as two tanned snake hides, some nails, and a hammer, use the hammer on the shield and it will assemble itself.

if you're too lazy to freaking do that, then use the best shield you can that doesn't take away from your magic accuracy boost. a toktz ket xil (obsidian shield) would work, and gives good defense against rangers, which is magics biggest weakness.
