Yes you could train defence with melee without wasting cash on runes so never do that.

Personally, I went to one side of the varrock sewers and casted crumble undead at the skeles on the other side. THis is in the lower part of the dungeon.

Ya, if you ever do do crumble undead...do it on the ghoasts under varrock. You hit 12 to 15s pretty easy and they don't really hurt you.
