Port Forwarding

Yes, I recently got a router and Im trying to port forward some stuff. It's a linksy router.

I visit port forward .com and I get this http://www.portforward.com/english/rout ... G2/Xbox_Live_360.htm

The only thing I have wrong is I dont get what to put in the little IP adress blank spaces. I can obviously tell I need to port forward this, because downloading something is extremely low speed. So, help please

Edit: Also explain to me why I need to do this, I have a million applications that I need to do, and it only gives me a few spots :S

Edit again: Apparently I had to setup a static IP adress. I enter the the port forward info once again, and still my sbow download is stuck at 14%, and its only 80 mb!

Edit again 2: When searching for a new device, should I put it under as a computer or device? Im not sure as I think computer since the 360 is trying to access the internet.

Ive been trying to setup port forwarding for my Xbox360 and computer for ages and I cant figure out how :oops:

If you figure it out let me know how you did it.

Would you care to tell us what model the Linksys router is? That will change the way to go about this.

First off what does the Xbox connection test say? I assume it says your connection is moderate or something along the lines of that seeing as you are posting here. Based on what you said, you don't know the IP address. You need to get the last octet from your Xbox configuration display. You then want to enter that into the port forwarding dialog.

A word of warning, your Xbox IP can change. If it stops working after you do this, the fact it changed may be causing it.

As a footnote microsoft has this grandious service called UPnP (Universal Plug 'n Play) which should handle this. I never had luck with it. Stay tuned for my February Informer article on this sort of thing

Actually I figured this out msyelf yesterday, (I called MS, got some asian guy said it was a porblem with my ISP, wtf?), I entered commaned in Start --> Run, then did IP config, I entered that into my xbox, didn't work so I entered my router static Ip that I made, didnt work either. So I put them back on automatic, reset my xbox and router, seemed to work. I think I figured out most of the stuff now, thanks.

Well Ill just have to reset the stuff I do then, I guess xD

Apparently it worked.

Cab you explain to be why I need to port things and why I need to do it? Why can't I just have it split my connection and that be the end of it? Just some questions

Oh, and how do I get more slots for porting?

Well, If you don't need the security or don't want the features your wireless router provides then you could plug your devices (xbox, pc, etc) and your internet connection into the 4 LAN ports on the back, the wireless should still work.(The main thing here should be to have the internet connection on the LAN side instead of the WAN side) This will essentially make your wireless router be a wireless switch, I'm not sure if this will work with your xbox or not because all of the devices will share an IP address unless your modem has a router built in and is not running in bridge mode.

If your xbox works fine connected directly to your internet connection then it should work fine connected this way because, without the router in the way, there is no port forwarding to mess with.

Well my Xbox didnt work when i didnt port it. Now I have it ported, works fine. I can continue to port things, not hard. Now I want to use port my XBox 360 Media connect, but Im out of ports. How do I get more?

Usually you can't get more ports on manufactured routers, third party firmware may give you more ports but you may lose some other functionality. But you should be able to setup port range forwarding which may allow you to open up some single ports.

Enter the Default Gateway from the IPConfig into your web browser.

Enter the password.

Click Gaming.

It allows you to portforward there.

If you read the posts, you'd understand thats not what Im asking.
