Ok, say that one of you're idiotic friends downloaded a certain .doc file, which opens up in Word. Now, can that install a keylogger onto my machine?

i dont think you can get keyloggers from .doc files :?, but im not the right person to answere that question.
anyway, i suggest you yo scan you comp for spywares with http://housecall.trendmicro.com its a free and good anti-virus/anti-spyware program. or you could download microsfts own anti-spyware scanner. check mikes "general email and hacking warning" post.

key loggers can execute from nearly everything, however, this the chances that someone would create a very intuitive keylogger, that 1, hides in a .doc file, and 2. sell installs, is beyond what i would call "wanting a free ride",

and such a keylogger, would not likely be listed in the known spyware list.
