PS3 gets price cut

TOKYO (AFP) - Sony Corp. announced Monday a 100-dollar price cut for the PlayStation 3 in North America and plans for a beefed-up version of the console in a bid to catch up with rivals Nintendo and Microsoft.

Sony said it had cut the price of the PlayStation 3 (PS3) with a 60-gigabyte hard drive to 499 dollars in the key North American market, effective immediately.

It also unveiled plans to sell a version of the PS3 with a 80-gigabyte hard drive in North America from next month for 599 dollars, following its launch in South Korea last month.

"We're introducing the 80-gigabyte model and with that comes the price cut of the 60-gigabyte" version, said Sony Computer Entertainment spokeswoman Nanako Kato in Tokyo.

The 80-gigabyte model "isn't that much different from the 60 gigabyte (model). It comes with the same features but more capacity," she said.

Sony has no plans at present to cut the price of the PS3 -- or introduce the beefed up version -- in other markets, Kato said.

"It depends on the demand. Each market has different conditions," she said.

That's not the point. the point is making good games for the PS3.

Because people will pay good money for good games. With the price cut, PS3 price is equal to 360 price, and 360 still has more good games.

And this is why sony will never get my money. They give there customers the middle finger.

They price cut in the US where it's already cheapest and leave it at £500+ in places like the UK, where it's already more expensive than in the US anyway.

Mean while MS takes a 1.1billion dollar lose cause they decided to extend everyones warrentys by three year. Hell they payed 50 million dollars just for exlcusive content for GTA on the 360.

Yeah, why the hell would anyone go with sony, they'd never spend or lose that amount of money for there customers, proof was with the PS2 when a lot of them was failing.

Sony is dieing and poorly tries to go back on the track and win the race against Wii and Xbox360. They poorly try to come up with ideas to get their customers back. There will be up to 100 games releasing for PS3 this year and 16 of them will be exclusive where Sony might have a chance to go back on track, but I don't think it will help them much. They already screwed up as much as they could.

even though PS3 is pretty much a bust, i think when we get to the next consul wars if sony does not shape up they will be completely out of the gaming market. all hail nintendo!!!

I'd still rather have an Xbox360, and that's coming from a long-time PS supporter. I just haven't seen any good games for it. The only one I can think of would be FFXIII, but judging from what happened with FFXII, it'll suck.

Xbox has such better games. TES4:Oblivion, Command and Conquer, GOW, The Darkness, Halo 3. There's just a better selection.
