http://www.canada.com/cowichanvalleycit ... 20-9c8a-67d7deb77478Marijuana is the second largest factor of British Colombia's GDP annually. Even more than the lumber industry there!
It produces a staggering amount of money for an illegal substance. Legalizing it would prevent this money from flowing untaxed into 'black markets' in addition to allowing companies to improve the quality of the drug both in its quality and side effects.
If the drug were open to the market, I suspect we will see a huge decline in the use of cigarettes and alcohol, thus removing much of the pressure on the healthcare system as smokers and alcoholics are costly to hospitals.
From a different perspective:
Marijuana is hardly a drug. Its simply an organic plant which just so happens to make you feel good when it is burned. Other drugs tend to be tampered with and/or are produced in a laboratory.
The brain even has cannabinoid receptors (named after the canabis plant where marijuana comes from). The receptors accept the drug like a piece of a puzzle.
The main reason it hasn't been legalized is due to the negative attitude it is given by the media and that the legalization of the drug may destroy relations between countries. Laws and views of the drug are much more liberal in Canada than in the US, but Canada does not dare legalize it as it may shatter the bond between the countries.
