I went to Barnes & Noble Booksellers and bought HTML 4 for Dummies.
Taught me enough to make a simple site, the rest I guess you learn from experience. And I use freewebd to practice. Not bad to use it that way :p
That book is actually quite good, but I do websites, and take it from my experience here. If you use solely HTML for all design stuff, u wil have a LOT harder time then just learning basic html (all that is really needed), and CSS. CSS is good, if you want a good site for how CSS can be applied to a webpage, go to
http://www.csszengarden.com . This site isn't a site for learning, but has good examples. Also, there is CSS for dummies, but use w3schools for css to get your started, then go to google and search under "CSS Articles", and you will find some great sites. If you want to get more into the design part, buy the CSS Zen Garden book. Its over 200 pages and teaches you SOLELY on design. Theres even a whole like 50 pages just for fonts. This will teach you how to create designs that are appeasing to the eye
