it has come to my attention that many people on rsbandb have been attacked by someone in various scenarios via the offense report system. as a result, they have been muted, banned, and become depressed, etc, not too many examples...

so, I've made this guide to help those who have been convicted for joking or for a misunderstanding get out of hot water. I've noticed many of you have problems with making effective appeals, so i thought i'd help out. its more just guidelines, and a single example, but the intent is to show you how a successful appeal is made. i hope im helpful, and within the legal limits of it.

note: I WILL NOT WRITE AN APPEAL FOR YOU. DON'T EVEN ASK. also, THIS IS NOT A GUARANTEE YOU'LL GET OFF USING MY METHOD, NOR WILL IT WORK IF YOU ARE OBVIOUSLY GUILTY. This is just the way i analyze offenses and clear my name. i've actually done pretty well for myself using the method i describe here; take a look.

the first two were worth 2.5 blackmarks each, and the rule 11 violation was worth a full 10.0 blackmarks. instant ban, but as you can see, i have no blackmarks on my hands.

ok, appealing an offense comes down to a few steps.
1: carefully read the evidence and try to remember the event. you need to identify a few things: what did you say that broke the rules? why did you do or say whatever it was? identifying these are the first things you do for an appeal.

2: think about how you wanted something to sound and how it actually sounded to others. what was your intent in the comment? how might others have interpreted it?

a note here, if you intentionally did something wrong, like insulted somebody, or tried to trick somebody into giving their pass, or something obviously illegal, then you suck and deserver the punishment.

3: do a little bit of sucking up to jagex. if you still have room in the appeal, mention that you won't do it again, and be specific, and sincere.

4:THANK THEM!adding even just the one word shows you have some decency an could show enough good intent to save you.

ok, once you have learned what the source of the problem is, now you are ready to make your appeal.

now, time for a format example based on one of my own appeals.

heres the evidence from my latest "offense"

so, rule 11 is site advertising. jagex doesn't like this because people get scammed by sites like these. so, lets analyze this. step one: what did i do wrong?

well, i "advertised a site" by typing lmao@creepybacon.com
why did i do it? because creepybacon said something funny and i like to respond in interesting ways. bam. in answering why i said that, i just made a key statement for my appeal. so, that tells my side of the story, but theres no proof in that. the most important thing in an appeal is providing logical proof that you are not guilty.

so in my proof, i have to think about how it sounded to the reporter. i said it with the intent of being funny, but to someone who didn't know that they might have thought i was giving out my email to scam people through non-ingame conversations. so how can i prove that i was not scamming?

telling them "i didn't do it" is not enough to prove your innocence. in the case of a website, the best evidence is proving it was safe to have said it. the top cases of this for us intelligent law abiding bnbers would most likely be talking about rsbandb in our clan chat. this is fairly easy to appeal. for this circumstance, you should discuss the conection between mike12088's clan chat and the fansite itself. in my case, the site i named did not exist, so i had no real problem.

my appeal: it isn't a direct quote, but i've retyped it fairly accurately from memory:

hello, i believe there's been a mistake. for reasons unknown to me, some evidence was not included. a friend of mine, "creepybacon" had said something funny, and i wanted to respond with more than the uniform "lol" or "haha", etc. so in my creativity, i chose an email as a play on words for laughing at his statement. the site mentioned does not actually exist, and i intended no harm. i will not use websites as a source of comedy in the future. thanks.

needless, to say its a bit over the 400 character limit, and the original was edited down a bit, but thats a good thing. you should ALWAYS put as much detail into an appeal as possible. never have less than 350 characters if you are able to. also, be smart about it, and make an intelligent sounding message. in a yoda-like way, don't try to be smart, just do it.

a parting note: an apology will NEVER get you out of black marks. apologies are only to be used when you know you are guilty, or know it is impossible to successfully appeal. what an apology does is give you better odds for a last chance appeal later on in your runescape life. if you get enough offenses to make it to last chance, and all or many of your offenses were failed appeals, you'll probably be banned. if all of them were apologies, you'll probably still be banned, but if you have a lot of successful appeals, one or two failed appeals, and a few apologies stuck in there, you have better odds of surviving than you would if you had no apologies at all. they show remorse, which is key in a last chance appeal. so in summary, only make an appology if you think you cannot successfully appeal the offense.
