How to not be a noob
The Internet, Runescape included, is plagued by noobs. What is a noob, you ask? Well, a noob is like a newbie (or newb) – a new player, or someone who has recently joined a game, a forum, or anything like this – however the noob has one important difference. The noob is an idiot.
So how can I stop myself being a noob?
There are many things you must remember if you do not wish to be considered a noob. These are some of them:
-
Spelling and grammar are important. Capital letters at the beginning of sentences. Full stops at the end. Simple things that make your post or comment a valuable contribution, not spam (Stupid Pointless Annoying Messages).
-
No blindingly short messages. Possibly the most annoying thing on a forum is when someone posts a one or two-word comment. Every message must be AT LEAST 20 words, or it isn’t worth considering.
-
No chat-speak. Chat speak such as “neway” for anyway, “u” for you, “y” for why. Its very annoying and whoever invented it must be shot. There are three exceptions to this rule: “lol” meaning “laugh out loud”, “lmao” meaning “laugh my *** off” and “rofl” meaning “rolling on the floor laughing”
-
For crap’s sake no leet. Leet is the language of noobs, and most people will shun you for using it. If you don’t know what leet is, it’s where you replace letters with numbers and symbols. For example “A” becomes 4, “B” becomes 8, and “R” becomes |2.
-
NO BEGGING. This is the most important rule in the entire world. If you beg, you will automatically be deemed a noob and will be looked down upon by everyone.
-
Don’t use the word “dude” or “dood” or “duud” or any version of it. It’s just bloody annoying.
Those rules apply to general noobishness. The following apply to Runescape:
-
NO BEGGING. Again, I know, but no Runescape player likes a beggar.
-
Read the guides on the site BEFORE you start playing. If you have a basic knowledge of the game, you wont annoy people by asking questions that may seem necessary for you, but everyone else knows. For someone who doesn’t play Runescape, the question “Is iron better than bronze?” may seem a fair question. To those who do play, it makes you look like a noob. The guides on the main Runescape site could answer your question even before you start playing.
-
Memorise the world map, at least the free-to-play section. It helps, and people often get very annoyed telling noobs where to go to get to Varrock or whatever.
-
DON’T trade with someone just for the hell of it. If you actually want to buy something off someone, ask them how much they are willing to sell it for. Remember “K” means “thousand gp” and “M” means “million gp”. DON’T trade with someone if you have something to sell. Say what you are selling, and if they want to buy it, they will trade with you.
-
You are not the best player in the world. You are not “God’s gift to Runescape”. Don’t be big-headed. Don’t be an egomaniac. When you begin, you are a newb. Being an egomaniac just makes you a noob.
-
Don’t insult people unnecessarily. If someone doesn’t want something or doesn’t like you, accept it.
-
You cannot make millions of gp at level 3. I know there are guides out there that say you can, but they are a waste of money. Make your own gp.
-
Don’t cheat. Only noobs cheat. That means don’t use macros, don’t use autominers/smithers/fishers/whatever, and don’t try and scam people.
-
Spend some time looking around forums when you’re not playing Runescape. Some examples include
http://www.runescapecommunity.com,
http://forum.tip.it and
http://forums.rsbandb.com (my personal favourite). It will give you an idea of what kind of things really go on in Runescape, and will teach you that you aren’t a high level at all, even though 300 skill total may seem quite high to you. When you do go on these forums, however, don’t spam them.
Don’t make posts just because you want to be wanted or acknowledged. That’s noobish. As a general rule, dont make any new topics until you have about 50 posts, only reply in existing ones.
-
Don’t say you’re friends with Zezima. Don’t say he’s going to give you money. He (or she, I’m not sure) isn’t. Its all a lie.
-
Don’t say you’re in a huge clan with more than 1000 people in it. You’re not.
-
Don’t lie, full stop. People don’t like liars.
Well, I hope that has given you enough to go on with now. Remember these things, and despite the fact you’re still a newb, you wont be a noob. Everyone starts off as a newb. But not everyone has to be a noob.
