Jagex released an update totally based on RuneCrafting. It makes the skill MUCH easier to do and level up, not to mention, get lots of any type of rune QUICKLY.

Mage of Zamorak Mini Quest

First, you should do the Mage of Zamorak Mini Quest. Talk to the Mage of Zamorak, usually in level 4-6 wilderness, north of Edgeville, along the Edgeville river.

Image

Image

Watch out for pkers! If there are any players within 6 levels of your level, I suggest you world hop to another world, and try again. The conversation with the mage is not long at all.

He will tell you to meet him in the Varrock Chaos Temple, which is NOT the Chaos Temple north of Varrock in lvl 20+ wilderness (I went there and nearly got pked :(). It is actually the building south of Aubry's runes shop in South-Eastern Varrock.

Image

The Zamorak Mage will be in the southern most part of that building. Talk to him for awhile, and he will give you a Scrying Orb and he will ask you to go to three different people that teleport you to the Rune Essense mining area.

There are five people throughout RuneScape that teleport you to the mining area, and the choices are Aubury in Varrock, Sedridor at the Wizard's Tower near Draynor, Cromperty in Ardougne, the gnome wizard Brimstail hiding in a cave in the south west corner of Gnome Stronghold, or the wizard Frumscone in the Magic Guild.

Once you have teleported to the Essense mining area three times, the Scrybe will be charged, and you can talk to the Zamorak Mage again. Talk to him twice to recieve your rewards, which are about 1k magic exp, a book filled with information on the abyss, and a Small Pouch for Rune Essense storage.

The Small Pouch Looks like this:
Image

To reach the abyss, go back to the Mage of Zamorak in the Wilderness, and you now have the option to have you teleported to the abyss.

Pouches

Before RuneCrafting, you should get armor, a weapon, teleport runes, a Ring of Wealth and plenty of food. Do NOT bring anything too valuable! You get automatically skulled when you enter the abyss, and all prayer points are drained, and if you die, you, of course, LOSE EVERYTHING!

Check for pkers, then enter the abyss. Attack the abyssal creatures there. There are three types:

Abyssal Leeches
Image
Combat lvl: 41

Abyssal Guardians
Image
Combat: 59

Abyssal Walker
Image
Combat: 81

If you want to get Rune Essense pouches quickly, I recommend you kill Leeches, and an occasional Guardian. ALL abyssal creatures drop ALL pouches, so Leeches drop Giant pouches, and Walkers drop Small Pouches.

Continue to attack the creatures until you have a Medium and Large pouch (Giant as well, if you have 75 RuneCrafting, but it takes a little while longer to get). Once you do, teleport out of the abyss, and head back to Edgeville.

The Medium Pouch requires 25 RuneCrafting to use and stores 6 Rune Essense. It looks like this:

Image

The Large Pouch requires 50 RuneCrafting to use, and stores 9 Rune Essense. It looks like this:

Image

The Giant Pouch requires 75 RuneCrafting to use, and stores 12 Rune Essense. It looks like this:

Abyssal RuneCrafting

FINALLY, you are ready to RuneCraft :D

- Equipment and Inventory

First, you need the proper armor and supplies. Ask yourself what your best non-combat related skill is of the following: woodcutting, mining, agility, firemaking, or thieving. Bring the related skill's main item (example: if woodcutting, equip an axe, if firemaking, bring a tinderbox) if any. You can also bring teleport runes or an Ectophial (highly recommended) so if you get attacked by pkers and need a quick way to get out of the wildy, simply teleport. Remember, if you lose your God Book, simply go back to the Lighthouse near Rellekka and ask the man inside for the God Book back, and he will return one to you without charge and with all pages. Do NOT use the Zamorak Book, it does not have a Magic Def Bonus. Use Guthix or Saradomin Book, preferably Saradomin, it gives better Magic Def.

You should look a little something like this:

Image
Image

If you dont have these items, there are some alternatives:
-Lower Dragonhide, or Ghost Robes
-Legends Cape
-Mystic Boots (Adds to Magic Def)
-Archer Helm (Better than Mystic Hat in Magic Def, but costs more and can be hard to buy off players)
-Elemental Shield or Anti-Dragonfire Shield
-Ring of Life

And you should be carrying items like this:

Image

The food is totally optional. If you have 70+ defense and 70+ HP, you shouldn't have to bring food if you aren't making Law Runes. If you are making Law Runes, food is recommended, since you cannot bring any weapons or armor with you to get into the Law Temple (it's located on Entrana). That means you must use your agility, thieving, and firemaking skills to get into the Law Temple.

You can also bring teleport runes, an ectophial, or tiny crystal, which is recommended for quick and simple teleport just incase you are attacked.

If you dont want to lose your glorys, then there are two simple methods you can use to avoid losing them. One of them is to bring a prayer potion, and drink a dose, then use prayer to keep the item of the most value, which is your glory. You could also get Rings of Duelings and teleport to Castle Wars, bank, take out a Glory Amulet and teleport back to Edgeville. Both of these methods do slow you down a little bit, but if they are totally needed, then dont be afraid to use them.

- The Wilderness Run

Now, head into the wilderness, and check for pkers using the mini map. If there are pkers that are within five combat levels of yours, you can either world hop, or go through the backdoor route that takes slightly longer to get around the pkers.

Image

If there are no pkers, right click the Mage of Zamorak and click "Teleport."

- The Abyssal Obstacles

Right off the bat, you will be attacked by the abyssal creatures. Run to one of the blockages that you need to destroy to get to the center (each requiring a level of 30+ to pass):

"Chop Tendrils" (woodcutting, requires Axe)

Image

"Squeeze-Through Gap" (agility)

Image

"Distract Eyes" (thieving)

Image

"Mine Rocks" (mining, requires Pick Axe)

Image

"Burn Boil" (firemaking, requires Tinderbox)

Image

"Go through Passage" (no skill needed)

Image

The overall best option is by Mining the Rocks, especially when you are runecrafting nature runes. This is because you usually get teleported somewhere close to the Mine Rocks option, which makes travel quicker and easier.

- The Inner Ring of the Abyss

Once you sucessfully pass the obstacle, you will enter the inner ring. Use this map to get to the rift that teleports you to the temple to bind your essense into runes:

KEY
Image

Image

Try to remember what direction (North, South, East, West) the rift you want to get in is. It helps when you need to find the rift once in the inner ring. Once you go through the rift, you will appear in the temple. Just bind your runes, empty your Pouches, then bind those runes. Use your Amulet of Glory to teleport back to Edgeville (many amulets help, and a Games Necklace as well to return to Hero's Guild and recharge the amulets).

You will also notice that the obstacles are not in the same place each time. There are three plans of where the obstalces are, and each time you enter the abyss, a plan is randomly selected and placed on the map, so the obstacles are not in the same place each time.

After awhile, the pouches will degrade, lowering the amount of rune essense possible to be carried for the largest pouch you have. To fix the pouch, simply talk to the wizard in the center of the inner ring, and choose the bottom line. This will fix your pouch. If you forget to fix your pouch, and in the case of the Giant Pouch, the amount of rune essense possible to carry will lower after a few trips even more. So don't forget to fix it.

Repeat to get tons of runes. Happy RuneCrafting :D

The Opponent

Basically, if you know your opponent, you have a much better chance of survival running to the Mage of Zamorak.

Melee:

Pure melee pkers will not have much of a chance of pking you unless they are VERY lucky with a dagger or maul. They will usually stay back in lvl 4 wildy, and wait for you to come. They will not have enough time to kill you.

Mages

These are the toughest pkers to get by. They will usually have teleblock spells and entangle spells. They usually entangle first, then teleblock, so this gives you time to teleport out of harms way. Remember, if you wear what I suggested, there will be a MUCH better chance that you will not get hit by the spell.

Also, remember, if you are teleblocked you can still get teleported by the Mage of Zamorak. He uses a teleother spell. Once you get to your alter and bind runes, simply log off to disable the spell's effect, then log back on and continue runecrafting.

Once you are entangled, the pker will run after you with a dagger or maul, or just stay back and hit you hard with god spells. Sometimes they bring ancient magicks, which means they cant use teleblock. The ice spells hit VERY hard on you most of the time, even with magic defense bonuses of 90+.

Rangers:

These are slightly harder to get by compared to melee pkers. If you bring what I suggested, you should be fine, since you will be able to get to the Mage before they inflict enough damage to kill you, especially since their double special has been taken away.

Bottom Line:

If you feel you cant pass these pkers, world hop. Do not take any chances, just hop until you can find a world where you are not threatened. Always check their levels and keep an eye on the mini map AT ALL TIMES.

Tips

1.If you are entangled by a pker, teleport IMMEDIATLY. Do not wait around and hope you don't die, because pkers usually do get you eventually, then it's just too late. If you don't have teleport runes, drop one essense, then unequip your glory ammy and teleport. Rub it right after the pker hits you, and if you're quick enough, you'll be able to teleport to safety. The overall FASTEST way to teleport is by using an Ectophial, so if you have one and dont feel comfortable going into the wilderness without it, bring it. It can be obtained by completing the "Ghosts Ahoy" quest.

2. Always stay to the east side of the area, near the skeletons. They will automaticaly attack you, and since the area is not multi-combat, you will be vulnerable from pkers attacking you until you're out of the skeletons reach. If you feel you're going to be attacked and can't turn back, attack a skeleton quickly, THEN run for it.

3. If you feel you are about to die and cant teleport with the glory or have no runes, quickly drop your pouches. Once you die, race to the bank and grab a Glory ammy. This its much easier if you've done Recruitment Drive quest.

Get food and go back to the wilderness and grab your pouches back before they dissapear. Remember, they are not tradeable so other players won't be able to pick them up.

4. The overall BEST runes to runecraft are nature runes, that is if you cant make death runes. They go for 300-325gp each most of the time, never below 300, and are always in high demand. They are also 9 exp per rune essense, so its quite good exp as well. By runecrafting nats instead of, lets say, airs, you can make 300gp each on nats, sell them, then buy your airs at a rune store or off the forums, and still make money off the nats you sold. So if your runecrafting and cant make deaths, make nats. Laws require you to wear nothing to protect you, and you can get easily pked that way.

If you can make death runes, I highly suggest you make them. They are sold 300 each most of the time, and are medium high demand. They're also the best exp so far, at 10exp per rune essense crafted.

5. If you have completed the Desert Treasure quest, you will have access to Ancient Magicks. One of the Ancient teleport spells is Paddewwa Teleport, which teleports you to the Edgeville Dungeon. This spell costs 2 laws, 1 fire, and 1 air. This can be an alternative to glorys, its cheaper than buying glorys. It takes a little more time to get to the bank, and get less runes per trip, buts its an easier, faster teleport from pkers.

And one small thing, the bear head (or whatever it's called) gives more magic defense than the mystic hat.

I don't know why i noticed that

You tell us to not use the Zammy book but in the picture you are wearing one. :P

Great guide though. I am going to be runecrafting soon. This will be helpful.
