Help with a PHP script

I am learning PHP and have written a PHP script that creates a dynamic image, but I want it to be able to be accessed like your dynamic sig. Currently, you have to type
http://www.host.com/img/image.php?name=NAME

to create the image. How would you make it so you can just access it by

http://www.host.com/img/image.php?NAME
or
http://www.host.com/img/image.php/NAME

Well obviously im not just gonna tell you flat out how to do it, but it uses the REQUEST_URI in the server commands and string functions to get the name if you know how to do that.

And I thought guest posting was disabled....
