Completely Lost User Profile

Hello again...
Some of you may remember from this topic that my computer was temporarily losing the user profiles, but this time I can't even log in. All of my files are there, I have backed them up just in case. I have restarted several times with no effect.
What should I do?

This happened to me too!
But since I was on an evaluation copy of Windows, it didn't seem important until all visual styles failed to load and got reset.

What I did was I logged off my account and just used my lightweight one instead for an hour or two and tried once more on my main.

I don't know about Vista, but I hope this gets fixed. :shock:

EDIT:
Just happened again, but instead, everything was in an in-between state.

You can't login....? Try booting into safemode.

Firstly you must try logging in in safe mode. If this works then you may be able to log out and reboot in normal mode and be able to log in. It would be highly unusual for an account to be deleted.

Do you have access to another user account? If so, go to User Profiles (Control Panel) and see if the account in question is there. If this isn't possible or the account is gone, then there probably isn't anything that can be done. In which case you must reinstall the OS, but at least you have files backed up.

If you are able to log into another account and confirm that the other account does indeed exist, post back and I'll attempt to help further.

Ok, I booted into safe mode and it gave me a temp. account. When I logged in after restarting, I got this error " The User Service service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded. "
All of my files are still there.

I confirmed through another account.
What now?

Copy your files, go onto a working account and delete yours, reboot and create your account again.

Can I just check a couple of things to make sure I've got it right.

So, you've booted in safe mode and you were given a temporary account, and were able to log in with this account, and confirmed that the files from the "broken" account still exist. But then you rebooted into normal mode and were unable to log in and got the error message your above.

If this is wrong, please say so.

As far as I can see, there is only one possible way of possible regaining your account- a system restore. You'll have to use another account (or the temporary account in safe mode) and restore to the last time you were able to log in with the broken account. If this does not work, you're going to have to create a new account and copy over your files. If problems still persist even after this, you may be forced to reinstall the OS.
