I plan on replacing my 6 year old laptop come Cyber Monday, was planned for awhile now but yesterday my laptop's baclklight that lights the screen broke. I have already once before had the entire screen replaced two years back, they quoted me at 150 minimal to fix if it's only the broken light.

Forget that since I'm buying a new one in 2 months, so I just bought a VGA cable and am currently running my laptop's screen through my TV. Feels weird to get use to for the next few months as my eyes are not great and can't even see what I'm typing in this message all that well so forgive me for the spelling errors.

I haven't even attempted to get on Runescape in this setup. hehe

Anyways my question, I rambled. I know how to use technology but not the details on tech itself.
I'm clueless when it comes to that, I know this forum host smart people in the area, I'm asking for help in what to look for in a new laptop, what makes one good or not so good.

As far as brands, my 6 year old laptop which has been good to me over the years is Toshiba so I'd like to stay with that brand.

Like system specs I'm useless at knowing, for example, I know RAM is good but don't know what makes it good.
I'm not a hardcore gamer by any means, only game I really need to run is Runescap and some League of Legends, real casual stuff.
Most importantly that the laptop will last me years as my currently laptop has done for me.

Price range, well nothing like a thousand or anything. But like to spend around the $500 range if that's not a ridiculous request or not. I can spend more if needed. Just an example

Any help, tips or advice I'd appreciate

Well since prices are going to change a lot on Cyber Monday I can't really suggest any laptops right now.

Pretty much your best option without knowing much is to just enter each laptop's CPU and GPU on http://www.notebookcheck.net/ and see how they stack up against each other. (Use search at the top) Avoid anything with integrated graphics like the plague. (Compare CPUs using the 3DMark 06 - CPU score and GPUs either with framerate in a game or 3DMark 06 score) Wouldn't go with anything 4GB of RAM or below in that price range. As for storage space however much you feel is necessary. Also I would not stick to Toshiba only because that severely limits your options.

Here is an example of a CPU page and GPU page so you know what to expect when you go looking up CPUs and GPUs

Thank You but unfortunately wasn't able to raise enough funds for that deadline. So I missed it.
*life, huh*

I actually been thinking of switching to a desktop rather then buying another laptop.
Wouldn't that be better for the long haul?
That way I can better stream Netflix and such, which is nearly impossible with my craptop.

Yes, would you be willing to build it yourself?

Building a nice desktop and then getting a small, inexpensive laptop is a good combo. You can even set it up so you can remote in to your desktop using your laptop.

No, as that sounds more pricey, As stated before, I'm tech stupid, wouldn't know where to begin, I trust in the companies to give me what I need already.

Building it yourself costs less and you get more for your money, do you know anyone familiar with computers that could put it together for you?
You could also put it together yourself if you are willing to learn a bit.

My laptop kicked the bucket last week, bought a new desktop today.
It's a Dell. 23 inch screen and it's awesome. Takes time getting used to.

Retrieving all my old files from my old computer to new, cost me 600 dollars, but getting on Runescape, since playing since 2003, I have never been able to run the game in hd or have it be this smooth.
Thanks for the help Bonsai

The hard drive better have been half dead for them to be charging you that amount of money. If it was a simple file transfer you should go back to the store and shoot them.

I'm sorry, that's my bad. New keyboard, bought a different keyboard then the one that came with the computer. It's one of them bubbled in the middle for wrist mold and comforts.
I meant the computer cost 600 dollars. I have a portable harddrive so I knew when my laptop died all my files would be safe for me to put on my new desktop.

But get this, it took about 30 hours to take all 60,000+ files off my laptop but only 15 minutes to put them all back on my new computer.
