Modern Warfare 3 Thieves Crash Into Van Carrying 6,000 Copies

Remember when a pair of robbers with semi-automatic handguns stole over 100 copies of Call of Duty: Black Ops at gunpoint? Here we go again, only extreme style: Up to 6,000 copies of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's were reportedly stolen by thieves in France on Saturday morning.

I say "stolen" and you're probably thinking some guys walked into a warehouse, then walked out with a few palette's worth of product. Think again: These thieves targeted and then crashed a car into a van loaded with thousands of copies of the game, driving in southern Paris.

According to French site TFI News, after the car crashed into the van, two individuals wearing masks emerged and used tear gas—that's right, tear gas—to subdue the truck drivers. They then absconded with the truck, reported to be carrying some 6,000 copies of Modern Warfare 3 estimated in value at about 400,000 euros (about $550,000 USD).

It's like an episode of Breaking Bad, only with video games (and real). What's next? Will game shipments require armored cars and guards with guns?

Anticipation for Modern Warfare 3, which debuts tonight at midnight, is sky high. The second disc of two from the PC version was reportedly stolen in late October, with pirated versions appearing on torrent sites a few days later.

They should have stolen a game worth stealing, like BF3 or Skyrim.

Also, Breaking Bad is a badass show.

Heh. When you need your games, you need your games. And maybe it's not a good game, but maybe people will still buy them. Pure profit right there.

i think the question is how would you sell them all? i'd assume they are all french copies therefore they have to sold in france. how would you get rid of 6000 copies without drawing attention to yourself.

Black market. I'm sure they exist for video games. I'm sure there are ways. Sell it to a video game store for less than it is. Probably some places that would buy them at reduced cost.

There are also some places that just take the keys off the boxes and sell those instead. Very popular for SteamWorks and other titles that use some sort of online service for activation.

If Activision were smart, they would know what CD keys are on the stolen games.. From that, they could likely trace the stolen keys back to the original sellers. Not sure which version they got, but I think the Xbox and PS3 versions don't have any activation codes.

I considered that, but still. What if you buy one of those games? Is it fair to take it away from you on a mistake? Now if you knew they were stolen, that's different, but I don't think Activision would know any better. Really, though, 6000 games is a drop in the bucket for them probably. Just don't let it happen with the next title...Call of Duty: Gulf War.

Amen to that!
MW is overly overrated, Skyrim has very good graphics and I heard only great things about BF3.
Breaking Bad is one of my favorite shows. (I think second, my first is Dexter)

I'm not surprised they steal CoD games, even if they're really lame, there's plenty of millions of stupid customers that will buy buy them and yell DUDE OMFG COD IS TEH LIKE BEST GAME EVAH L0LLLL
They actually remind me of this video.
