Up until now I have always thought - - Skills and merchanting are the keys to a wealthy RuneScape account. In fact I begin to see that I might be wrong. Up until now I have worried about which skills to get up or which items to merchant to get that extra million. Combat, has always been at the back of my head. Now though, as I try to get those money making skills high, I realize I've been doing it all wrong!
Combat is the source to a wealthy RuneScape account. With a high combat level you can go on DK trips or a KQ trip, recieving valuable drops. I am not saying that I will stop training skills all together, but I think that I should start getting that combat level up, because combat is the real money maker. I know that many of you may think differently. Some of you may say, "you just havent found the right merchanting technique" or "well... you should get your 'x' level a bit higher to get that item" but I think that combat is the way to go.
I guess that pretty much sums up everything I wanted to say. I would like to know your opinions about this.

My opinion is that there is no true way to make money the best. If someone is more comfortable doing something as simple as fishing and woodcutting for steady money, then that's fine. However, with DK (Dead kittens?) and Kalphite Queen trips, there's more of a risk involved. The loot may be greater, but you also run the danger of losing your valuables.

Basically, combat is something a player is better off spending their money on. Combat's a gamble. Fishing's not. The only reason you see it as a sure-fire way of making money is because you're a risk-taker, in not only losing your goods but also the rarity of valuable drops.

Some people, like me, aren't too keen in that department. Whatever guarentees good money is always fine by me.

Dead kittens :) .. I meant dead kangaroos
I guess that is true. In my opinion I level skill levels for the actual level and rank. To prove that I know how to play this game - - all aspects of it. Not just combat or merchanting. I think that if I were to want a make money fast it would be through combat though. I guess you are right in saying that it could be a possible risk... but a greater risk means a greater reward... and how many times do you actually die? I can't say I know the answer to this question. Anyways, in my case, if I ever did die I would have my skills to get me back on my feet again.. I guess

i fully agree with you argetlam. you can, (and i do) get money from killing creatures.

i dont knwo your combat level to compare, but at level 75 (im 77 now, not much dif) i've been out with the best of them. i kill the king black dragon for drops, and i kill hellhounds en masse to do clue scrolls, which i solve and sell the merchandise. occasionally i try a kalphite queen run, but i can never stay there long.

the lesser drops from monsters like that i just alch. i killed trolls for a while the other day and got some addy stuff, and the other guy there with me happened to steal the one the dropped a granite shield... grr.

if you are going to raise your combat, i suggest doing it on slayer monsters. not only does it get your slayer skill up to fight better monsters, but it decides for you, so you don't have to think about it for a while. or it gets you to a monster you wouldn't normally think of fighting. and the best part is, slayer monsters have great rare drops. even the weak ones like crawling hands drop colored gloves, a 1-5k profit, (red mystic gloves beign the best), and all of them have a chance of dropping a dragon shield left halve. a cool 1.5 mill sale after you make it into the full shield.

and finally the big high kill you in 2 hits monsters, like the kq and daganoth kings, d chain, seercul, d wc axe, various other things... metal dragons with d legs and skirts.

the list goes on, all you need is a little stratagy. good luck in your combat ventures. (what are your combat stats btw?)

In my opinion, combat and merchanting are the way to go.

Skills in my opinion are just fillers so that you don't get bored in the game. Besides, almost half of the skills are money sinks, I even concluded that skills are just there to use up your money on.

The difference of making money thru merchanting and skills are like real life. You may have great cooking skills, but you're still getting the same pay as the other chefs where you work at. But if you have great business skills, you'll be getting more money than your colleagues.

About combat, you can't go KQ hunting at level 60. You do have a point, combat does matter in making money, because only higher leveled monsters drop good stuff, and you have to be strong to take on them.

Just my two cents.

ok well. im all over the board with this one.

i came back to rs day player owned houses came out and started by merching planks from me starting with 300k to ending with 2 mill that day. then planks quickly fell in value. i soon merchented my way to 5 mill by the end of june. and then by the end of july i had used skills to get to 6 mill and then from 6 to 10 by the end of augest with 90 fletching. i have since used combat training (to get from 83 to 91 combat) since june to now to get another mill.

now im prity sure. with high lvl non combats i can make 1 mill - 2 mill an hour
i know for sure i can merchent 1 mill to 2 mill an hour if not more
and i know a guy with 85 slayer who gets about on avrage a whip an hour to every hour and a half (1.9 mill every time)

so on avrage with level (hes was 108 back in augest prob alot higher now)
with lvl 100+ combat
a skill thats 90+
and banked 1 mill

you can make on avrage the same amount of money per hour with merchting, combat, or skills

i think it just comes down to which style you like best. i find skills most fun. and then combat then merch. so il use my skills befor i go train.

but thats just my 2 cents

chaoticspsyco my combat level is 80, (which I believe is low compared to the average player), so I was a bit suprised to hear that you go on these trips etc. Maybe my problem isn't my combat level, maybe just my experience in fighting monsters and what to take.
the game king -- Thats one way your friend made money through combat, there are many other ways. Such as barrow runs, and many other different monsters with great drops. If he spent hours doing barrow runs he probably would have been luckier and become richer.
Ultima -- Yea, thats what I'm trying to say I guess. I think that skills can give you a secure way of getting money. You always know you can resort to your skills for money but if you want big money you will do combat related things. I cant say much on merchanting because Ive never done well with it.

i only get out there at my level because i don't want to be excluded from activities normally directed only at higher level players by level 85 i plan on soloing the kbd on a regular basis. hopefully by then i will be able to take on the kq as well. keep in mind that fighting these creatures isn't just a monetary source, it is a thrill, something fun to do. skilling en masse, in my opinion, is pretty dang boring. in rs, you should get money from what you enjoy doing the most, just like in real life.

speaking of which, if you'd like to organize a kbd trip with me, I'd love to introduce the two of you... and im sure the kbd would just love to eat, erm, meet you. =P

Combat makes cash by luck, unless you PK or sumat that takes skill like that. I say don't go with combat as your main moneymaker, it's pretty much gambling. But a lot slower, with the same consequences.

Exactly, hunter is not a moneymaker. It is there to have fun and just be a skill. Like most skills are.

the only thing you need to make money, or do most things in rs for that matter, is time and patience.
