Yes and no. Somewhere around half of the attendees are non-forum members. Thus, they don't vote on the forum. By allowing for a non-forum based voting method, all participants of the event can vote.

Strawpoll seemed like one of the fastest way to set up a non-registration based poll that we could re-create each week to throw into the Mumble server during events and have people vote. It's somewhat more successful than strictly forum-poll based voting, as most weeks I would change the poll and announce it as such, but we'd get 3-4 votes in total. Strawpoll, when we've kept it up-to-date, draws more than that consistently.

Yeah, unfortunately it's got to be redone each week manually and I don't think it's been done recently. I believe it's been created and pasted in Mumble during events, but we've forgotten to copy it over. I'll update it for next week (this week will be TF2 again).

Sorry for any confusion.

Wouldn't the forum's native poll software be less or similar hassle to what is being done now?

We have the people who actually come to the events vote there and then; it's easier to get them to vote at that time than come here, log in, find the topic, and vote.

It also reflects what the people who are actually coming to the events want.

But now the problem is that every week is TF2 and I don't want to play until you guys have CS:GO up.

We've played TF2 every week for about a year now, perhaps 5-6 that were different, but largely it's been TF2. I've had choices up for others to vote on long before we switched to the new polling system. People didn't vote consistently enough to change the outcome.

All of my votes have been for CS:GO over the past year or so now... I really do enjoy TF2, and since I don't play really at all outside of the event, it's not like I'm getting my fill elsewhere. But some variety would be nice. I did have this remedied when the event was newer, in that we'd forcefully change the poll so that no game could be repeated for three weeks in a row. This was the rule for a year or so, and I can't fully remember why we changed it, but it was something to do with every third week being less populated than the prior two. I fear this would be the result if we instituted the same rule again.

Mumble doesn't require a forum login anymore? This must be new with the reboot.

PS. I have also been voting for CS:GO, when the poll works...

PPS. Not everyone has time to game all the time, especially when the game is not what they want to play.

I'm not sure regarding Mumble anymore; it was at least temporarily set so that non-registered users could somehow join. That may have changed, but I'm not sure on the specifics anymore.

RE: PPS - Yep, but the poll is (theoretically) always posted in the thread so that everyone can vote. Allowing people to vote during the event requires the least amount of work on behalf of voters who attend, yet keeping the poll around outside of events allows any others to vote for their choice as well.

Been that way for a while now

I've seen you once at an event in the past year, and that was two weeks ago for Team Fortress 2. We've had 5 times that CS:GO has won (10%) in the past year, including one in February. The reason we ended up not playing CS:GO those nights is because nobody else showed up. If you came to the events regularly, your objections might be reasonable. As it stands, I see no reason to cater to people who aren't going to come to the events.

Maybe I should have added "recently", "have been voting recently". I've been in the event (TF2) at least 3 or 4 times in less than a year, maybe you weren't online at the other times, I don't know. No reason to jump all over me just because your life has more time for gaming than mine.

I wouldn't say that I'm great at any of the games but some variety is nice.

Just thought I would add some constructive criticism, if it's not wanted, just say so.

For a proof of concept, I just matched your votes on the strawpoll with Team Fortress 2
As such, we'll be using the forum polls as suggested.
Thank you for your input.

EDIT: When I said your votes, I meant you all, as in everyone who voted. Was not talking to JRD specifically there.

Looks like we're doing CS:GO this week, y'all

Several people have suggested that we try out Halo: Combat Evolved as a game for an event. I think that'd be a great idea!
What do you all think?

I'd love to play HCE!

But the problem would be having enough people to join in on a custom game, or else it wouldn't be very fun. Unless (on days like we're at low attendance), the event would go server hopping from one Mexican to the next.

If that's the case, coordinating server hops and ensuring there's enough space for the gang would be a real pain to handle, HCE just doesn't do that kind of partying.

Would never publicly advocate it but Custom Edition is a free version of the game, and you can host your own locked game on game ranger now.

I tested out game ranger today and it works with Combat Evolved and Custom Edition

Also, hype for Counter Strike Global Skinffensive :)

EDIT: As far as I can see, they aren't interchangeable due to an issue with game ranger where if the exe's differ you can't connect to a Custom Edition game mode.
