Post subject:  AAC Format File or Older Episodes?

A suggestion was brought to me by someone that it may be a good idea to bring in an AAC version of the podcast. AAC is the default codec of iTunes. AAC can compress to better sound quality at a lower file size. Eg. You could have a 128Kbps AAC file at the same size as the 64Kbps MP3 file.

You can read more about AAC here, you can also see some alternate players to iTunes.

That is option 1.

Option 2 is to add in the older RSBANDBUpdate! episodes (prior to 45) to the libsyn hosting service. Those episodes would not show up in iTunes as it would require a massive amount of re-adding information into the show database. They'd be available for direct download from the Update site.

There's option 2.

Please vote and post comments.

I voted yes to the AAC. AAC is a lot better than MP3, both in terms of quality and compression.

I did a little experiment:

RSBandB Update! 73: 64kbit MP3 size - 20.1MB
RSBandB Update! 73: Converted to 128KBit AAC - 20.6MB (note the bitrate - double the quality, and you only add 500KB)
RSBandB Update! 73: Converted to 64KBit AAC - 10.5MB

I use iTunes for the podcast, and i'm sure many other people do. Those who use Winamp will also be able to use the AAC format.

Im not sure how many other people still listen to the older episodes, but i dont. I missed 72, but didnt go back to listen to it.

I voted for quality(ACC).

And like MOTV said, it is better then an MP3

Plus, for older episodes just check the forums. Its not that hard.

I voted for Put Older Episodes Up, but then when I read Shanes post I realized I should have put AAC. So i'll change my vote in this post. I change my vote to AAC.

No, we only have 250MB allocated a month. The only way that would happen is if someone was to pay for an upgraded account :P

*Shrugs*

AAC seems to be the crowd favorite, so I voted for it. I can get used to something new no problem.

I don't have iTunes, but if what MOTV said is true, I do have Winamp. So AAC is the best bet. (If you don't have either, GO GET WINAMP AND VOTE FOR AAC!)

I should mention that MP3 won't be going away. We will simply have both.

We'll only be doing one choice.

We are not going to rely on a 3rd party to provide extra money to host old episodes and an AAC version. It's just not right to rely on listeners to pay for the show...

But if they OFFER to, why not..?

Just like when I wanted to get everyone to help you get your FIRE CAPE SHANE. But you said no.

Why say no so much lol.
