Years before I knew of cloud storage I used a cheapish external hard rive to keeps all my important files safe for when my laptop would someday kicked the bucket.
Such as pictures that if lost would never get back. That means a lot.

It worked fine. When my laptop did die, I had the files on the hard drive so was able to upload them when I bought a new desktop.
No problem.
But the hard dive itself became old and crappy. That's when I found out about cloud storage.

I've been using Mozy for about a year.
It works well enough. (haven't needed to actually retrieve any files yet)

But I'm looking at cutting costs. I think it's 8ish a month.
So I'm asking.

What do you guys use? Cloud or external drive?
Any recommendations for either?
Thanks

Anything that's large or needs frequent access is stored locally on a large mass storage drive. I have backups of everything important, mostly on external drives.

Cloud wise, I use Dropbox for sharing files and maybe some light backup. Looking at moving to OneDrive though...

I imagine OneDrive, Dropbox, and Google Drive all perform the same. It's just a question about which interface you prefer and what works best for you.

Once ISPs don't do dumb things like sell packages with very high download speeds and maybe 1 or 2 mbps of upload speed, I will consider using online storage. Until then, I'm using external HDDs.

I have 131 GB of storage on OneDrive through promotions (Windows Phone etc), and it works quite well. Can get 50 GB for $1.99/month. I've never been fond of Google Drive's interface - it works well enough, but the interface is trash.
