I am currently using avast! free.

The default settings are pretty irritating (Voice notifications after every update etc.) But if you configure it properly you can make it completely silent and it will never bug you unless it detects something.

Microsoft Security Essentials

Unobtrusive, light, and thorough. Used to use AVG, but I found MSE to be better.

MSE here as well. Simple set and forget, also not a resource hog.

MSE as well, but I also use Malwarebytes. But the best antivirus is yourself. :P Just don't click on or download anything you aren't sure of.

^ I'm with Kulla. However, I've found recently that MSE sometimes is a real CPU hog. Have to tweak it a bit.

Windows Defender (Windows 8 version of MSE that is bundled with the OS). In terms of side-programs, I have the paid version of Malwarebytes that I'll run on occasion.

Yep yep. MSE is the best for Windows 7 I would say.

AVG but I might have a look at MSE.

Wow, I'm kind of surprised by all of these answers of people using default/pre-installed antivirus. I have McAfee that came with my laptop, but it expires soon. Am I wasting money by paying for a third party program when Microsoft's would do me just fine?

Stay away from McAfee or Norton. If you want something simple MSE does the job fine. AVG, Avast, and maybe NOD32 are great choices too and don't hog your resources.

I know this thread is old but still all implies today.

I'm looking to getting more protection. I have used AVG Free version for many years now, but these days since I do a lot of online banking I'd like more protection. (though I'm not one who typically gets viruses)
Should I pay $30 for Mcafee (the trial has ended on my new desktop 2 weeks ago) or should I pay the $50 to upgrade my AVG from the free version? Since I am already familiar with AVG and like it cause it works and is simple.

Just get MSE. It's not worth paying money for something you can get for free that's just as good, if not better.

I Read that MSE does not work for Windows 8.
