Thoughts? What would you change? Meeting expectations?

For me personally I am quite impressed with the speed boost Safari got. iMessage is good, no more SMS fees (to other iOS users). Finally... iCloud. I don't really have a use for it since most everything of mine is synced with Google.

One of the happier moments was realizing now that we have better customization for tones for alerts (text, email, etc.)

The only other thing that is a slight annoyance is that the Reminders app can't sync to Google (yet). From my reading this is something Google has to enable either through the Tasks API or Exchange.

Oh and please only post if you've got a device using iOS 5 :).

I think it's great! It has many droid-like functions, but we all know that's a good thing! Probably the best new function is taking a picture on the home screen.

Yes indeed.
I like it, actually. iMessage is nice and the Notification Center is nifty.

For those of you swapping iMessage handles be sure to set your caller ID if you don't want strangers seeing your phone number. Settings -> Messages -> Receive At -> Caller ID.

I don't understand why the Reminders application is independent from the Calendar and Notes. It seems kind of redundant since those two pre-existing apps can do all that Reminders does. Why not just update Notes with a "create list" button and revamp the Calendar to actually work decently to program your daily events to?

iOS 5 runs painfully slow on the first generation iPad, so much so that I downgraded (firmware restored) my iPad to iOS 4.2.1, and jailbroke it from there.

I find it funny that iOS 5 on iPad non jailbroken runs slower than 4.2.1 jailbroken. I think apple made 4.3 and above laggy on purpose to encourage first generation ipad users to upgrade to the overhyped iPad 2.

Well the iPad 2 does have twice the memory of the first iPad along with a better processor...

yes but the change from 4.2.1 to 4.3 wasn't dramatic. I can understand it getting a small quantity slower, not a large..

perhaps I'm just a conspiracy theorist?

Eh, it's a bit tough to think that they're intentionally making the devices slower. While I would imagine they're focusing on their latest-generation products, compatibility for previous generation isn't completely out of focus.

I've finally installed 5.0.1 + jailbroken, and it feels the same as my 4.3.3 install. I'm using an iPod Touch 4th gen (so similar specs to the 1st gen iPad). The only real thing that's keeping me from staying stock firmware is the lack of settings in the pulldown notification menu in iOS5. If SBSettings functionality was implemented, I'd now have little want to jailbreak. Soo close, yet not enough.

I have noticed some choppy animations (the very end of the close app animation)

+ when I was playing gameloft's "Gangstar (the first one)", I was getting frame by frame gameplay.
Same with "SimCity" - but simcity seems to be better on 5.0.1

I'll stop buying apple products if they keep making the experience for older devices terrible. My iMac and 4S run rine. (Mac is still on SL because I heard lion was laggy)

I found myself jailbreaking for the ability to install a custom hosts file (for cookies and ads).

If you are looking for SBSettings like material on a non JB device this app might be useful to you.

Thanks for the recommendation, but I like SBSettings' quick access to common tasks such as Wireless on/off, brightness control, data on/off (more useful for an iPhone/iPad w/3g), location on/off, airplane mode on/off, and Bluetooth on/off. Throw in Fast Notes, which I rarely use anyway, and Processes for good measure, but the ones mentioned previously are more important to me. Having a quick at-a-glance look at the WiFi address is nice too, at least on occasion.

The pulldown notification area in iOS5 is nice, but I still would like access to the same functions that SBSettings provides. After that, the rest of the reason I jailbreak (a few applications such as WiFiFoFum and Flashlight) could be gone without or replaced.

I updated my 4S to 5.0.1 a few days ago. Joshua Hill said there will be a blogpost (presumably news) on greenpois0n.com today?

Hopefully jailbreak news.
