Jailbreaking: It's against the EULA, so therefore it's technically illegal. People do it all the time. I'm rather impartial to the whole thing. The thing that people need to know about it is to not start crying if they brick their phone/ipod or apple decides to brick all the jailbroken phones/ipods.
The moral of the story: If you need an app that's not in the app store, use your own judgment. It's a lot like building a hackintosh PC.
As for the Google Voice thing, we've talked about it on the show before here which you really should listen to if you're in any way interested in Runescape or Tech
.Here's how it's breaking down so far:
- AT&T denies having any role in the application approval process, therefore removing them from any blame. While they have had discussions about apps that are dangerous to the network, there's nothing relating to Google Voice.
- Google's response is rather cryptic. The whole section about "what reasons were you given for the application's removal" were classed as confidential.
- Apple denies that Google voice was actually rejected. They also state that they "continue to study it." The main issue they seem to have is that Google voice can replace the iPhones stock icons and allow the phone to go directly to Google voice.
So as you can see, there's still a long way to go in this process.
