ok jailbraking, i find nothing wrong with this personally. i have jailbroken my ipod touch and its great, i can mod my ipod to do what ever i want, i have a windows 7 theme and it looks sexy and theres no reason apple shouldnt officialy release alternative modifications other than the dull black back round and slide to unlock. and another thing while im on the subject of ipods and apple... they recently denied an apple from google called google voice which you would be able to make free calls anywhere and with no time limit using wifi. i have and ipod touch and i purchased apples new headphones that have a built in microphone (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB770G/A) they work great, and i downloaded an app from the app store called icall. with icall you can use you use wifi to call people but theres a 5 minute limit to the calls and you need an extreamly strong wifi signal to acualy launch the app. so, thought on jailbraking and apples killing of google voice? |

Jailbreaking: It's against the EULA, so therefore it's technically illegal. People do it all the time. I'm rather impartial to the whole thing. The thing that people need to know about it is to not start crying if they brick their phone/ipod or apple decides to brick all the jailbroken phones/ipods. The moral of the story: If you need an app that's not in the app store, use your own judgment. It's a lot like building a hackintosh PC. As for the Google Voice thing, we've talked about it on the show before here which you really should listen to if you're in any way interested in Runescape or Tech ![]() Here's how it's breaking down so far: - AT&T denies having any role in the application approval process, therefore removing them from any blame. While they have had discussions about apps that are dangerous to the network, there's nothing relating to Google Voice. - Google's response is rather cryptic. The whole section about "what reasons were you given for the application's removal" were classed as confidential. - Apple denies that Google voice was actually rejected. They also state that they "continue to study it." The main issue they seem to have is that Google voice can replace the iPhones stock icons and allow the phone to go directly to Google voice. So as you can see, there's still a long way to go in this process. |

Shane wrote: The thing that people need to know about it is to not start crying if they brick their phone/ipod. Which is exactly why you always make a backup before you attempt to modify what any software does/runs. Early today I was doing some hex editing. Had I been stupid and not made backups along the way, I would have made a real mess with some certain software. Moral: make a backup, then you don't have to cry about bricking/ruined software. ---- Personally i think jailbraking is fine, but if you mess it up it's your own fault. Don't contact Apple's support when you've clearly done something you shouldn't have. That would be like breaking into a house, the owner shooting you, and then you calling an ambulance. It's your own fault you got shot-- you broke into the house. (In a situation like this I'm sure the ambulance would help you though). |
