Neither will win. As long as there are some movie studios on each format there will be no winner. I think what will happen is that more electronic companies will end up making dual format players or DVD media will just die out, see the end of my post for what I think will happen. That way it's just easier for the consumer.

But as for which one I'd support... That's complicated as I'm sure you know I watch quite a bit of Star Trek. I'd have to go with HD DVD since Paramount is supporting HD DVD. They havn't done any HD releases of Star Trek yet though...

Then again if I wanted to watch 24 in HD I'd need to go with Blu-Ray.

I'm just going to wait it out until they become cheaper. We don't even have a HD Tv here yet. There's really no point to HD in Canada unless you've got lots of money to fork out for the extra channels. I think it's like an extra $30 a month for the HD pack :roll:

Call me the one to rain on everyone's parade but I think DVD media will come to an end in the next few years and this will be an irrelevant debate. In the next few years a few things could happen:
1. Consumers in North America will get better internet connections.
2. 1 will enable consumers to download movies on demand from places such as the iTunes store.

It just needs to be cheaper and easier to use than a HD video format...

Ya, so theres this big issue going on with HD DVD and Blu-Ray. One is set to replace DVD eventually but at the moment theres a bit of a struggle going on between the two. HD DVD being the cheaper option and Blu-Ray being the pricey route but with more memory. I've been keeping an eye on it and it's all getting rather interesting, well, if you're as sad as me. BlockBuster announced some time ago it was going to be only backing Blu-Ray and wont stock HD DVD meanwhile this has recently come up: http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/b ... 295565.ece Now the one reason Sony claims Blu-Ray is better is because the memory means you can fit a lot more on, more games, more content. Now i don't see the point, you can already fit hours worth of extras on DVDs as it is but who the hell watches them? They suck, there nothing interesting. So for me, I'm sticking with the cheaper HD DVD, i don't see the need for more content on disks that no one cares about. What about you?

HD DVD, blu-ray sucks, friend got it and it messed up a few Blu-ray discs.and its laser is poorple.

HD-DVD is winning so far due to it's cheaper price and therefor there will be a higher demand for HD-DVDs. Blu-Ray player itself costs more then PS3, so here is a huge minus. Blu-ray isn't all that bad, but honestly not that much people buy Blu-Rays at the moment.

Like Shane, I don't think either will win at the moment. When more peope adopt HD televisions, dvd players etc, then it will be decided. And whichever format the porn industry chooses will certainly make a large difference. As for what Shane said, I do not think DVD media and things will end any time soon. The 'connected home' with things like Apple TVs and things is realistically a long way away, and even then, people have disc drives in their computers to play DVDs and things. People still like going out and buying a cased disc with their movie or music on - I did today, in fact - I bought a CD instead of downloading it from iTunes or whatever. The truth of this statement is probably greater than at first it would appear. A friend of mine did say there was a potential for four layered-double sided blue-ray...now I'm not sure where he got that...but that is 200 gb for all of you counting at home... hddrive select ctrl+c blue-ray select ctrl+v wait six hours... I think there are benefits to both but I think blue-ray will eventually win as it is the high capacity drive...also there must be a theoretical maximum to the DVD/HD-DVD laser...being as it is red and the blue-ray is blue (or violet whatever you want to call it) I believe the blue-ray has a much higher theoretical maximum. Just my take on it though. Then again there are many variables that haven't been dealt with or have even come to the forefront yet that the discs will have to deal with...either way it is going to be interesting...I don't watch movies as home (and rarely in the theatre) so I am not to interested in that side of the debate...but it would be nice to be able to back up my whole hard drive or hard drive array on one disc.
