There are many huge sites out there that use ASP and MSSQL, like, for example MySpace, and there are more than use PHP and MySQL, the open source alternatives. For those of you who dont know, PHP and ASP are both server-side scripting languages used to make active content on websites. PhpBB, the forum software RSBandB uses, is PHP. MySQL and MSSQL are both forms of databases for storing stuff. Im not sure of the advantages and disadvantages of each, so it would be nice to know what they are. Which do you think is better, and why? |

PHP and mySQL are perfect for Unix/Linux development. Open source, functional, free, and powerful. PHP and mySQL are maintained by developers and the community. You probably don't have a phone to ask for support, but there is lots of people out there that will help you for free. The other thing about PHP and mySQL is that there are so many free softwares that use it. The language is free, subsuquently the scrupts that come out of it is free. ASP and MSSQL are good for Windwos development. However, using it is very costly comparing to other alternatives. ASP and MSSQL are maintained by Microsoft, a company, therefore they are commercial products. You get more support with them. You can wake up at 3am in midnight and somebody will be there to answer your question. Most scripts and softwares for ASP and MSSQL are commerical because they cost much money for companies or individuals to develop. I have little experience with ASP nor MSSQL so I can't judge it. But I am perfectly good with PHP and mySQL. I've never bumped into a problem I can't solve with PHP and mySQL. |
