Post subject:  Broadband Question

Ok so im getting broadband saturday, and there telling me i have to get a cable modem. Now i can pay $50 and get it installed and get the modem for free and install it my self. I was wondering if installing a cable modem into you computer is the same as installing a dial uo modem???

A cable modem is an external device.. However, there is usually the power cable/connecter, the cable line.. Then you can either use a USB cable or Networking cable from the modem to your pc.

If you use a USB cable, you can just plug it straight up to your pc via a USB port.. But however i find using USB is slower..

If you use a networking cable, you will have to have a NIC (Network Interface Card), basically a networking card installed in your pc. The port for the cable is larger than a reguler 56k modem for a pc.

Your cable modem "might" also come with software and device drivers on a cd.

May i ask what company you are going with?

If you have any doubts I'd get them to install it. Actually I'd get them to do it even for myself. That way if there is any problems with your cable line they can fix it when they come out. So get them to do it.

When I had my highspeed installed there were alot of problems getting the internet to work. They actually had to call for another technition to fix the problem.

It took me a good 2-3 hours to get mine to work with no help. Lots of problems admittedly most with my PC but you could wind up the same.

It's worth getting them to do it.

Go with ehternet if you can. It is faster and you can use it on more then one computer. The modem we have had some weird thing that if you connect it through USB it would only be able to work on that computer forever. I don't know why, but its stupid. Stick with ethernet for sure.

kk i've heard of insight, but dont know much about them.. I would suggest that, if the company would install it for free, then get them to do it..

Thats what i did, had them install it just in case anything happens, anyone can be smart and know how to plug everything up, but there may be things you dont know how to do.

As dave said, whether you install it, or the company, make sure its plugged up as Ethernet, which is just the network cable into the network card port.

if you have more than one computer and they are connected with a network then make sure the installer hooks your modem to that so all the networked pc's get internet access.

Very Easy to install, after the installation guys hook up the outside box, all you need to do it
Plug the power cable in to the modem
Plug the Cable cable (looks like a TV cable)into modem
plug an LAN from modem to router, and the rest should be very straightforward
