Post subject: | Ad-Blocking vs. RSBandB |
Hey guys, I was recently browsing Digg and I came upon this post. I use flashblock, but after I came across this article I have disabled it on the sites I care about, such as RSBandB. Spoiler for Explaination of types of Ads:
I've talked to Mike and RSBandB uses CPM, but if you use Adblock, flashblock ect. RSBandB doesn't get the money for that view. |

This may be a little weird, but... I enjoy ads! XD But more recently I've found that Firefox for some reason has been hogging up on my resources. Not ALL ads then. |

Some of the ads I see are quite funny, but I don't have an ad blocker, I believe I did have one at one point but I didn't like the big symbol it had that came along with it. XD |

I don't block ads, not unless it's necessary to save cpu |

I have an ad-blocker, but I don't think it blocks anything. ![]() Anyways, I figure what the heck. I'm on the internet to surf, not to be bombarded by or look at every single ad that flashes across the screen. These people are only trying to make money off ads, which is understandable for running a business. Money is needed to run a company and to profit. But I don't think people have to turn off their ad blockers just so sites and companies can stay around. The companies are supposed to tailor to your needs. Instead of turning off your ad block, leave it on and make the company find a way to advertise that isn't too annoying, but won't be blocked as well and force you to turn off your ad block. Youtube is a great example. They simply embed ads into their videos that can't be blocked by an ad blocker. If more companies had embedded ads like that, this probably wouldn't be as big an issue. Sure it sounds mean, but people shouldn't have to conform to the needs of a company. Otherwise, that's a company that probably won't last long. That's my opinion on it and I'm sticking to it. |

This is about turning off the adblock on RSBANDB or other sites you like + frequent, not on every site ... unless RSBANB's ads are really that annoying but they don't even profit off of them :S And I find the ads embedded in YouTube videos very annoying. :$ I don't think an ideal solution to people blocking ads is coming up with more annoying ads that are unblockable. Not that I don't agree with you in terms of a site ran by a large corporate company. But one ran like RSBANDB? |

Personally, I hardly ever notice the ads on RSBandB. Like I said, the ad block I use doesn't seem to be doing it's job. ![]() My point with the Youtube thing is that the only way these companies could really get around ad block is to embed ads, even if it is super annoying. Still, you only see the ad once and its only 30 seconds long at most. Either way, I think that ad block is perfectly fine, and if companies can't deal with it, too bad. Even if they do go out of business, someone else will pop up in their place (ideally). ![]() |

Shane and I are not in this to make a profit like you say most sites are, Duke. We do this as a hobby in our spare time. If we were aiming for profits, we would have closed this site down long ago. Last month after totaling up ad money, donations, and the few people who pay us for hosting on our server, we were $96 short of our hosting fees. Granted, it was February , which is always the worst month because of it's length, but the money is still quite short. Many sites would not be free to use if it were not for advertisements, you'd have to pay to visit all the sites you like. I understand most people who use adblock would never pay attention to ads anyways, but there are some ads (like the ads on television) that pay whether or not the person is in the room watching them. We don't warn anyone who admits to using ad blockers but we do remove posts encouraging people to use it. |

I understand what you mean. I wasn't trying to say you guys are in it for profit. I didn't know you weren't either. Now that I do, I'm still not saying it's bad. Perhaps the best way to put what I'm trying to say into words is to go back to Aristotle. Aristotle was much about finding the middle or mean of a certain thing. For example, cowardliness and rashness are extremes, but courage is a mean between these two. As advertising goes, I know some sites rely on ads to keep their content free and to stay up and running, but that shouldn't impede web surfers as they go about the web. This doesn't relate to BandB, but if a way could be found, a mean, between ads and ad blocking, I think it would be a better situation for surfers and advertisers on the world wide web. Like I said earlier, I still see the ads on BandB which probably means I don't really have a good ad blocker or one that works. I love BandB, and if you want to keep advertising, I can't stop you. As far as I'm concerned, the issue hasn't confronted me yet, and I won't try to follow my thoughts any further. I really got nothing else to say, good or bad. ![]() |

I like firefoxs built in ad blocker thingy. Although i suppose it's more of a pop up blocker. Cause I'm fine with adverts it's why I've got all this free content. What i don't like is **** popping up and irritating me. Oh and those **** sites that insist you do a survey before they allow you to view there content. They must make a ton off that and it's one big **** scam anyway cause it never unlocks even after you#ve filled in 5 pages worth of idiotic questions which are all made up. |

I've been on so many communities that were shut down because they couldn't pay for the servers... So many its not even funny to think of. I've disabled Ad-blocker for all rsbandb group sites. I even forgot I had it installed. Don't feel like seeing another community fall. |

I only add something to my ad blocker if it is unbearably annoying, like a pop up every page ect. That being said I will continue to do what I can to support this site and leave its ads alone <3 |
