Server has been dead slow for the past hour and we are now back to normal speeds. We were suffering from a DDoS attack. They are still sending tons of requests but it is now under control.

It sickens me that people do this kind of crap, what is the fun of taking down a fansite for a game?

Would refreshing a page, about 30k times, do the same thing?

That's in essence what it is but it's automated. DDoS stands for Distributed Denial of Service attack. Instead of one person sending many requests a huge net of different clients sends the requests. That's basically what's been happening.

So one person could not do it then with one computer?

DDoS: Distributed Denial of Service

They use multiple machines/IP's to bombard our server with a large ammount of requests to bring the server down to a standstill to make it inaccessible to users.

And no... if just you were refreshing the page 30k times it would not do a thing to our server, it would require thousands of people doing that on heavy load pages to do the same thing

Edit: Shane beat me to it

Hmm. Sounds bad, but it seems that you guys got it under control, and that's good to hear. Ask if you need anything ;)

Our old server was DDoSed once before which crashed it pretty much instantly. Yay for your server being better than ours. :D
