Post subject:  General Email and Hacker Warning

Hey everyone, this is just another general warning about emails and stuff. I'm sure you all know this but I will tell you anyways.

Well there are lots of people who are able to disguise emails to appear as if they have come from someone else, which is usually used to either try and obtain personal information about you, or obtain your passwords, or make it appear like the person they are impersonating really hates you or something and start some kind of emotional war.

Most often though... they will try and make you go to some website that looks exactly like another to get you to enter information to steal your password, and try and make you open an attachment that is a keylogger or a virus.

I want to remind you that any email address can be faked to look like it came from something like andrew 'at' jagex.com or anything at rsbandb.com or any other website to impersonate someone else.

Neither jagex, or rsbandb will email you asking for any personal details about you or your password!

We might email you but we would never ask for information about you, never send you links to another website, and we will never send you an attachment. And Jagex will never email you.

If you get any emails asking for your password or personal information, ignore them!

Now I will talk about some software you really should have, and I will list free versions of software that are really good.:
  • Anti-Virus Scanner - to scan files downloaded and protect your computer from harmful files.
  • Firewall- to block people from directly connecting to your computer and possibly taking over it or obtaining personal information about you.
  • Spyware Scanners - To remove spyware that gets on your computer from visiting websites. I recommend you install all 3 of these and use them regularily
Be safe!

One final tip.. look at the image below near the bottom left:

Another great anti-virus program is Ad-Aware by Lavasoft, ill see if there's a link to a safe download page.

Oh and under "Spyware Scanners" you said to "use all 3 regularly" but there are only 2 there. the first on ein the list appears to be missing. :)

What are you talking about????

I have Ad-aware on the list already, and its a spyware/adware scanner not anti-virus.

There is also an online virus scanner that has worked for me in a few sticky situations. Panda Activescan. It's totally free. It doesn't protect you from viruses, but it gets rid of them.

I think that some advertisement blockers filter out the word "Ad"...

yup when I turn Norton on, it filters out Ad-Aware...

That would explain it. My ad blocker pretty much filters out everything, that's why. Ty Dan, now I don't feel like a noob. :)
