Why don't players get the poison that they dealt to a monster xp?

For example: You are wearing a dds, you poisoneed a guard, and it hits a 6, but you don't get any experience for that damage? Why is that?

cause jagex made it like that lol
and maybe cause u only get xp when you inflict damage on someone
the poison is a internal effect in which u do not inflict the damage

Simple answer, because Jagex said so. A longer answer would be that you're not inflicting damage per-se, but the poison is inflicting damage as a consequence of something you had done previously.

I think this is the same question as why don't you get xp from the catapults in castle wars. The answers the same and that answer is that although you started the initial attack, the actual damage isn't inflicted by you rather by the poison or the rock.

Shouldn't the catapult rule apply to cannons too then?

Lets just be honest here, its cos jagex says so.

Good point Gareth, shouldn't it be applied to cannons too then?

After you stab an elf in the gut with a poisoned dagger, you're done. You can be in Varrock, far away from Lletya, and the elf is still taking damage. Are you causing this? No, you're not doing anything. The poison is acting on its own. That's why you don't get any experience; you're simply not doing anything.

^ That's how I always thought of it.

You and your friend could like poison each other and then go train a skill until the poison wears off, then re-poison. You'll both be getting combat XP (which is an issue as it's poison - would it go to attack strength or defence?) as well as the other skill, even though you're really not fighting anything.

It adds more "thought" to training combat too. Slightly more xp or slightly faster kills?

....Whatever...I really hope jagex would add in xp for poison though. (idc which skill it gives).

If it bothers you that much, just use a regular dagger with no poison.

its like when they released summoning they said that if a summoned monster inflicts damage, u dont get xp from it b/c u wouldn't get "experience" by having a monster attack for u.

same goes for poison, u dont get xp if some virus is hurting your opponet, b/c u arent practicing any attack on him.

I thought summoning familiars give you experience when they hit something? Different kind of familiar gives you different skill's xp.

that was added in after so many people cried about them not giving xp with the 2nd batch of familiars that got added. poison doesn't give xp simply cause ur not really causing the damage the poison is after the fact. the familiars are seen more along the lines of ur telling it how to attack, tho like i said was really only added in as a way to please the lazy lil cry baby kids.
