Depends on how far you want to get.

I got from 35 to 79 crafting with flax :P

Getting from 55 to around 65-70 crafting with flax shouldn't be too hard though.

Or you could make rings of dueling with emeralds you buy, but they're hard to sell lol.

Flax is really good... Raynebird (shes one of the top 21 crafters, so she knows what shes talking about :P) recommended that I do battlestaves when I go for 99 though.

Flax is good you can make money off of it and all, but it would take a long time. If you want to get it fairly fast you can buy silver and make tiaras that give 55.5 xp each. You can do Cofs that would cost a maximum or 150 ea. You can always mine gold, buy gems and make rings or amulets and sell them.

You can make b staffs, then alc em for some extra gp

Use cow hides until 57, then go kill green dragons and use those hides.
