Post subject:  Campfire Song - Baker's Folly.

Last night, I had this strange dream that I was with a group of children and we were singing campfire songs. What un-nerved me was that all the songs rhymed, made sense, and yet were songs I had never heard of before. I tried looking up the lyrics, but there were no matches.

Hardly remember any of them now, but I was inspired to grab one of them ... the concept, at least, and pull it back together.

So here it is. If you can memorize it, you can sing it at campfires. Good luck, and enjoy.

Campfire Song - Baker's Folly (by Alex 43)

*Nice, slow waltz. Played with a few strums of a guitar. Everything in brackets is what everyone else says right after the line.*

The waterwheel is turning, turning,
Covered up in rust.
The water-mill is churning, churning,
The wheat grains into dust.
It is this dust we gather up,
And put in a nice big bag.
And so, children, it is this stuff ...
That we'll use to bake a cake! (Yummm!)

*Speed it up - actually start playing the guitar.*

We add some flour to the bowl
And sift it nice and light.
And then we pour the water jug,
Until it looks just right.
And then we'll crack some eggs open
And pour them in the mix.
And stir that raw cake really hard!
Until the mixture sticks.
We'll then add the vanilla drop
That gives the cake a taste.
And just a pinch of baking soda's
Added to the paste.
We also need some icing, too.
We'll add it when it's done.
And in the oven goes the cake,
Should take till half past one.
Half an hour later,
We come back for our desire.
We open the oven and take a look ...
AND WE SEE OUR CAKE'S ON FIRE! (AAAH!)

*Main chorus - the last word in the third-last stanza is sloooow, the second-last stanza is slow and depressing, and the last one is just a quick, "DOH"-sounding punchline.*

It's burning, burning, oh so hot!
There goes all our delight!
Run around screaming, arms flailing,
The kitchen is alight!
We ran and got the firemen
To spray the oven cooooold ...
And all that's left of our lovely cake ...
Is a big lump of CHARCOAL! (DOH!)

*Nice and calm. Slow down the beat to strumming until the 4th stanza, where it speeds right back up again.*

Now don't you worry, everyone.
Everything is fine.
If we just can not bake a cake,
Then let us all bake pie! (Yummm!)

Get more flour, rinse those bowls!
And scrub the oven clean!
We'll make the pie shell like the cake,
Except let's add some cream! Mmmm.
Let's wrap the shell around the pan,
Now, what shall be the fill?
Apples? Cherry? Rhubarb? Yeah!
We can add more flavors still!
Add some chocolate! And some fudge!
And cinnamon and spice!
How about cabbage? Just kidding.
That wouldn't taste real nice.
We don't want our pie burnt now,
So somebody must stay.
Good grandma says she'll watch the pie.
While we all go out to play.
Half an hour later,
We find the kitchen looks the same.
Our grandma's sleeping on the floor,
AND OUR PIE BURST INTO FLAME! (AAAH!)

It's burning, burning, oh so hot!
There goes all our delight!
Run around screaming, arms flailing,
The kitchen is alight!
We ran and got the firemen
To spray the oven cooooold ...
And all that's left of our beautiful pie ...
Is a big lump of CHARCOAL! (DOH!)

Now everyone, please, it's all OK.
Dear children, please don't cry.
It's not our day to cook, is all.
Let's make a pudding pie! (Yummmm!)

Gimme a bowl, I'll show you how
To make a lovely jello.
We'll make it chocolate, vanilla fudge,
And for fun, let's make it yellow!
Add the base, and add the cream,
And melted chocolate too.
And stir it up with all your might!
Til it makes a lovely goo.
Now watch, real close, as I add a drop
Of coloring to the bowl.
Mix it up, and all behold!
The pudding's now yellow!
Now don't be scared, it's all OK.
The pudding will be great.
Instead of bake, we put it on
A refrigerator grate.
Half an hour later,
Though our day has been so dire.
We now can have our chilled pudding!
EXCEPT THAT IT'S ON FIRE! (WHAT?!?)

It's burning, burning, oh so hot!
How's that even work?
We chilled, not baked, that bowl of goo!
It's not supposed to burn!
We ran and got the firemen
To spray the fridgy coooooold ... er ...
And all that's left of our pudding pie ...
Is a big lump of CHARCOAL! (DOH!)

Now don't feel so deprived, children.
Though we don't wanna cook no more,
We can have our cake and eat it too.
Let's order it from the store! (Yay!)

*Pretend you're on the phone here for the next 16 stanzas.*

Hello, is this the bakery?
Yes, I'd like to order out.
I'd like to get- kids, what do you want.
I'm on the phone! Don't shout!
Ok, give me about a hundred pies.
Pumpkin and apples please.
And twenty thousand danishes,
And donuts filled with cheese!
We also need some cakes as well.
With 90 layers and rings.
How many pieces? Can't decide.
Ah, bring the whole darn things!
Yes, I think that's everything.
How long till you come by?
Half an hour? Fine by us.
I'll see you then. Goodbye. *Click*
Half an hour later.
I paid for the order and his tires.
We opened up the great big box ...
AND EVERYTHING'S ON FIRE! (AAAH!)

It's burning, burning, oh so hot!
This HAS to be a joke!
That fifty seven thousand bucks.
That's going up in smoke!
We ran and called the firemen
To come and give us help ...
But all they said was "Not AGAIN!
You put it out YOURSELF!" (NOOO!)

*Again!*

It's burning, burning, oh so hot!
There goes all our delight!
Run around screaming, arms flailing,
The whole building's alight!
The firemen never came to help,
Those meanies turned us down.
We could only watch as our lovely home,
Burned down to the ground. (Waaaah!)

*Depressing, until the 8th stanza, where we're all happy again!*

There we stood. We lost it all.
Our kitchen and bedrooms.
Johnny's toys and Mary's clothes,
And my home theatre too.
Our neighbor, Mrs. Appleseed,
Felt sorry for our fall.
And so she said, to cheer us up ...
She'll make muffins for us all! (Mmmm!)

Mrs. Appleseed's a cook;
The greatest in the land.
The worlds most finest, tastiest foods
Were cooked by her own hand.
She once studied for seven years,
To make the perfect dough.
And even won the world's cook-off
12 times in a row.
She hurried off to make her best.
Her oatmeal-raisin blast.
A single one once made a war
A thing of distant past.
Half an hour later,
She came out with the muffin tray.
We helped ourself and peeled the wrap ...
AND THE MUFFINS BURST TO FLAME! (AAAAH!)

We're burning, burning, oh so hot!
There goes all our delight!
Run around screaming, arms flailing,
Cause WE ARE ALL ALIGHT!
We ran to get the firemen
But stopped and passed out cold.
And all that's left of all of us ...
Is a big lump of CHARCOAL! (DOH!)

So now we're dead and in heaven.
We see what it is like.
There's lovely clouds, and pleasant breeze.
And mountains for a hike.
An angel chorus sings aloud,
With trumpets and their lyres.
But mainly, all that heaven is ...
IS ONE BIG PLANE OF FIRE! (AAAAAAUUUGH!)

... ok, maybe it's not exactly a "campfire song". Maybe more like one of those songs you record on CD and play in day-cares or something.
