I'm trying to restore and update my Ipod Touch 4th gen becasue my iPod wont turn on, it has the plug in to iTunes screen. I click on Restore and Update, and for whatever reason the Software Update will stop downloading in the middle of the download. It's done this 3 times now so i'm pretty much stuck with a dysfunctional ipod and no way to restore it. Is their any way to restore it without updating first? Or why is it not downloading properly. any help would be appreciated :)

You can use this site to download 5.0.1. Once it's downloaded, go to iTunes and shift+click the "Restore Device", and select the firmware you downloaded.

You can only restore to a lower/unsigned FW if cydia has your SHSHs

He doesn't say he jailbreaks his device. If he does, we'll get into that can of worms shortly, I'd assume. TinyUmbrella and other utilities will need to be used, but as you mentioned only if his SHSH blobs have been backed up.

Yes, my ipod's jailbroken. I tried using TinyUmbrella and it didn't work. What ended up happening was I think it somehow cause my USB not not work because i couldn't use my mouse or keyboard properly. I had to re install windows to have them work properly again. My mouse wouldn't move and no keys on keyboard would work even in safe mode? Any Ideas at this point about restoring my ipod or about the USB's failing?

Did you read TU's notifications? It won't work if you have cydia checked or something like that.

Go to a friends house (if needbe), save the SHSHs locally (cydia should save them automatically assuming you have previously jailbroken), encrypt the locally saved SHSHs, and upload to dropbox/box.net/gmail/yahoo/iCloud (as many places as possible, just in case).

SHSHs are what allows you to downgrade
