Post subject:  Wireless Router Problems
So my wireless router is experiencing issues.

It started this morning when I tried to connect to the internet via my Wii and I failed to do that.

So after playing around in my settings for a few minutes I checked my router. I unpluged the power and them repluged it back in and that did the trick.

It worked fine for another 2 hours than tanked again.

Did the same thing and worked for another 2 hours. When I got home later tonight from a party it wasn't working.

Any suggestions?
I'm not too sure what type of router it is because my Dad normaly runs that type of stuff in my house but I do know it is a D-Link.

I had something similar to this about a year ago but it was only every 2 weeks or so.

Does it affect everything that uses the internet or just your Wii? For me it was just my xbox and not our pc or laptop. I dont remeber what I did to fix it, if it is the same type of problem that I specified I'll post back when I remember.

I've had similar problems in the past. I never got it looked at professionally, but my guess would be some sort of overheating. Like you, my whole router would stop working, but if I unplugged for a couple of hours, it worked fine, usually for a couple of months.

The only thing I can suggest is leaving it turned off and unplugged overnight and try it again in the morning. Your experiences tell you that it should work fine then, but really your biggest problem is that it's doing it so often. Basically, leave it unplugged for a longer period of time.

If I remember correctly, when this happened to me I called Microsoft (o the joy of talking to people across the world from you :D ) because I thought it was my xbox, because nothing else was being affected. In the end he said he would conact my ISP(I have no idea of proof he really did), but after about a week it stopped and I haven't had problems since.

Another tip, on your Wii, try totally re-setting it up with your network. As in, scan for new networks, choose yours, enter the WPA, ect.

Hope that helps, Basically from the first paragraph, if re-setting up the network doesn't work, call your ISP.

If your router keeps crashing like that, I've found it has to do largely with the firmware on the router itself. You may wish to upgrade the firmware using D-Link's website / method, or try moving over to a more powerful firmware such as DD-WRT. I have not had to reset the router due to a router caused problem since I switched over several months ago. Before then, someone would have to reset the router several times per week.

Thank you PFK.

Some new info:
I found out that is a Linksys, not D-Link. *facepalm*
Also I asked my father and he said that it up to date will the latest firmware.

It is now going in and out with me not having to unplug it. It is almost like I have a low connect but when I am connected I have it 100%....

If the router is crashing, it's almost definitely a firmware issue. If not firmware (and I'm talking crashing, not just losing internet access, as this could be something ISP based. However, I believe you said that resetting the router always fixes this problem. This leads me to believe it is either firmware, or hardware based, always on the router side.), then it could be a hardware issue.

Hardware wouldn't likely be repairable, so we'll assume firmware. I'd suggest looking into DD-WRT for your router. Check the site database to see if your router is compatible.
