I am re-installing windows. Unfortunately, that means I lose everything. ![]() ![]() I found it today with a blue screen, nothing did anything, so I pulled the plug and restarted it. When it started, it did a scandisk, just like it usually does when it's restarted incorrectly, but after the scandisk, it gave me a blue screen with the following: Quote: STOP: C0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\DEFAULT or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable. I restarted it a few more times, but no luck. I started it on the utility portion and did a full system test, but it found nothing. I have tried safe mode, start windows normally and last known good configuration. All gave the same error message. I'm currently running Ubuntu from a CD, and I really want Windows back. Does anyone know how I can fix the problem? The last thing that I saw happen before it stopped working was iTunes updating. |

Well, it seems like on of the files in Windows are messed up. Maybe iTunes update changed something? Anyhow, you should wait for like Matthew to show up, I really don't wanna give any advice since it may screw up your whole computer ![]() |

Well, for starters I would read this. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822705 Since it can be some many thing. I think you can rule out hardware since you are using Linux right now. Also, recovering you PC will fix it too. |

![]() Please don't make a post if you aren't going to be trying to help. Theres a good tutorial on this here http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org/how_do_i_repair_a_stop.htm The "Harder Method" looks like it would definitely work just make sure to copy everything right, I know it can be easy to make a mistake. |

I already re-formatted the hard drive. I guess this topic has no purpose anymore. |
