Post subject: | Getting Flash to work on Ubuntu Linux |
Operating System: Ubuntu Linux, 2.12.1 Ammount of Ram: 504 I've: DL'd and followed the installation procedure that the adobe site says, with no permanent result. The problem is whenever I want to use flash I have to go through the installation process and then restart the browser and it works fine, but the next time I open up the browser and go to a flash page I have to reinstall flash again. This might be of help.. When I go through the installation process in the terminal I get this during it; Quote: /root/Desktop/install_flash_player_9_linux/flashplayer-installer: line 155: strings: command not found
Noticed the underlined command not found. Here's line 155; Code: MYFPVERSIONSTR=`strings "$1" | grep -e "^Shockwave Flash [.\d+]*" | sed -e "s/Shockwave Flash //g"`

1. Why such an old version? -> the flash code is probably built for new versions 2. Are you installing as root? -> if not then maybe part of the install saves something to the root desktop but can't becasue you aren't using root 3. With 2. & 1. -> maybe some of the script was built to work with newer and certain file systems aren't there ![]() 4. PM Masterofthevortex 5. Do you mean 2.12.1 GNOME, and Ubuntu 5.10 Breezy Badger? |

If you're using Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft, the latest version, then you can just install the flash plugin through the package manager. |

How would I find out which breezy badger and which edgy versions I have? And yes, I am running as root. The old version is because that's what my friend installed, I don't think any dramatic files would be outdated, I would think the updates would fix any that were. Where in the package manager? And I think the problem is in that command line that isn't found. I'll check the package manager. |

The package manager Applications -> Add/Remove Programs. If you're running Edgy Eft, it should be there. Its in Dapper Drake as well, I think, version 6.06. If you're using a version of Ubuntu before Dapper Drake, do this: Open a terminal, type: Code: sudo apt-get update Type your password and let it go through the upgrade process. Then, Code: sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
This process might take a while - it basically just downloads loads of files, then upgrades your system to the latest stable version, which is 6.10. Reboot, then go Applications -> Add/remove programs, find the flash player plugin, and install that. It should then work. |
