Since I know there are lots of Star Trek fans here, I'll ask this question..

In Deep Space 9, at least, the Ferengi value (gold-pressed) latinum above all else, presumably since it cannot be replicated like the element gold can. My question/discussion for us is what the value of a bar of latinum for them is in terms of a bar of real life gold today, or what kind of exchange rate you would guesstimate. I did try Google, admittedly not that hard, but didn't seem to find anything. What do you guys think?

I've found /r/daystrominstitute loves questions like these

Quote:
I did a conversion over on /r/startrek about a year ago of 1 slip = 2 USD.
Just remember that 1 bar = 20 strips. 1 strip = 100 slips. There has never been a conversion offered in-series for the value of a brick.

As in the weight in gold?

$2 USD/slip * (100 slips/1 strip) * (20 strips/1 bar) = $4000 USD per bar of Latinum
Using the exchange rate of 1299.90 per ounce, 1 bar of Latinum is worth approximately 3.077 ounces of gold

Does that answer your question? :)

Yep :P cheers. One bar of latinum is presumably heavier than three ounces, so I guess technically it would be worth less per unit weight  .

I dunno.
Spoilers for some episode:

Morn did swallow a bunch of latinum and kept it in his stomach for a long time, so it can't be *that* heavy, I guess?

You have the question well under control :).

But yes, Star Trek is good. Everyone should have a little of that in their life.

People should have star wars in their life as well.
Both series co-exist, one cannot exist without the other.

Hmm, I watched the Original Series...then I think Voyager, but the official site lost their transporter lock on the episodes and they disappeared D:! Then I watched most of The Next Generation and it met the same fate :x . That ticked me off for a while but eventually I found it on some less orthodox sites and watched the conclusion there. Right now I'm watching the last half of the last season of Enterprise. I guess that leaves Voyager to watch next :P.

Edit: whoops, profanity filter is a little touchy!
