WOAH. The Max cape of my real life.
Apox. 2160 miles long.

I've decided, and have started planning hiking the entire thing, a thru-hike, South to North.

It takes approx six moths, and I will be starting early March, 2016. It is a long ways away, but it's something that takes a lot of planning.

Has anyone hiked sections of the AT? Know anything about? I've never wanted to talk about anything as much as I do the AT, all my friends are already sick of hearing about it.

Never done the hike. I know the west coast equivalent is the Pacific Crest Trail which I hiked a small portion of. Why aren't you going North to South? Wouldn't you want to get the north section done first and not chance it being cold/winter when you get there?

I've only been on the PCT for a few day hikes, but from what I here it's harder than the AT (not to say that AT isn't hard).

The reason for going South to North is for a few reasons. The first is that I want to finish closer to home, and hiking NE in the fall is AMAZING. The second is that is "easier". This is because the main section is the hardest, and if you do it at the end you are in "Trail Shape" which make it a lot easier.

I wouldn't think the AT is easy by any stretch. With the PCT, you're dealing with a lot of mountains. I had forgot about the Trail Shape rationale, but that by itself is a good reason. All your reasons are good, though.

Also, hiking north to south puts you in the thick of mayflies....

Despite needing surgery to fix the issues with my hips, I think i am planning on starting far enough away that I will still be able to give it a shot.

I did parts of the North Carolina trail during undergraduate years in college with the guys i lived with off campus. We did it over spring break which turned into a solid bro trip, not too bad of a trail considering 5 guys carried enough sleeping and liquid courage material to be occupied for a week.

I have done a lot of hiking on the AT. I am an eagle scout, and in the years I was working on it, my troop did many hiking and backpacking trips on the AT. It is absolutely beautiful, you will enjoy it :)
