JERUSALEM — Israeli scientists have cultivated a cannabis plant that doesn't get people stoned in a development that may help those smoking marijuana for medical purposes, a newspaper said on Wednesday.

According to the Maariv daily, the new cannabis looks, smells and even tastes the same, but does not induce any of the feelings normally associated with smoking marijuana that are brought on by the substance THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol.

"It has the same scent, shape and taste as the original plant -- it's all the same -- but the numbing sensation that users are accustomed to has disappeared," said Tzahi Klein, head of development at Tikkun Olam, the firm that developed the species.

"Many of our patients who tried the new plant come back to us and say: 'You tricked me,'" because they assumed they had been given a placebo, he said.

According to Maariv, Tikkun Olam sought to neutralise the effect of the THC and to increase the effect of another substance called CBD, or cannabidiol, which has been shown to help diabetics and to ease various psychiatric disorders.

Not only does it leave users stone-cold sober, it also doesn't induce the munchies, the hunger pangs that the drug's smokers generally suffer.

Despite the innovation, it is unlikely to have any impact on Israeli law, which outlaws the use of marijuana as illegal except for medical purposes.

According to figures published earlier this year by Sheba Medical Centre and the Israel Cancer Association, medical marijuana has been approved for use by about 6,000 Israelis suffering from various illnesses.

This is despicable. They are trying to create an illusion that deadly drugs are safe and have any use in medicine. One day we will get the drugs out of hospitals.

People will smoke cannabis regardless of its legality. I say legalize it and stop being totalitarian and authoritarian.

I say legalize it but then ban all smokables to only allowable in private residence.

I think you're being way too strict over this because you don't have all the facts. Marijuana is not deadly and no where NEAR the same level as cocaine, PCP or these Bath Salts. No one has ever overdosed on natural marijuana and no one has ever committed cannibalism under the influence of marijuana. I understand you've probably been scared to death and bombarded by smear campaigns, but as someone who has used cannabis, I have never had a single suicidal thought or wished to harm anyone else while under the influence.

Oh noo, I'm eating the faces of goldfish crackers! Somebody stop me!

I'm done mocking you but you should really get the facts before you jump to such extreme conclusions.

Obvious troll is trolling, Momsrascal.

Let's get down to the nitty gritty here. I don't see what this does in favor for legalization. If anything, it makes legalization prospects worse. Let's say they opened up access to this kind of marijuana and it was legal. As the article states, it tastes, smells, and looks the same. How would testing be done to ensure it's the THC free type? And let's be honest, 99% of non-medical smoking of cannabis of any kind is to get the effects that THC provides, so why would plain regular Joes want THC-free marijuana legal?

Don't get me wrong, this is great for a good portion of the medical field, but this doesn't solve all their problems, either. Cancer patients are prescribed marijuana because it gives the munchies and encourages healthy appetite for those going through chemo therapy, so use of plain ol' Mary Jane is still needed in these cases. So, it's not a total silver bullet for their uses either.

That's a good point. The THC in Mary Jane is why it is prescribed in the first place in some cases and the people who do smoke it for medical purposes are usually going through enough crap with their conditions so it's ok if they want to get high.

Once upon a time smoking was good for you! Alcohol was considered harmless.

Lets not make yet another addictive substance legal why not learn from the past.

Why must we waste billions of dollars on policing a substance that is grown naturally from the Earth. Imagine if we used 50% of the money that will be saved from decriminalization of cannabis to matters such as education, urban renewal, and homeless assistance wouldn't the globe be a better place? One could argue that's is a drug with no beneficial purposes but ask yourself what purpose alcohol serves society along with death rates from alcoholism vs partaking in recreational cannabis use.
