http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-12-1 ... -70-yonhap-says.html Kim Jong Il, the second-generation North Korean dictator who defied global condemnation to build nuclear weapons while his people starved, has died, Yonhap News reported. He was 70. The news came in a radio broadcast at noon local time, Yonhap reported, citing North Korea’s official media. Kim probably had a stroke in August 2008 and may have also contracted pancreatic cancer, according to South Korean news reports. The son of Kim Il Sung, North Korea’s founder, Kim was a chain-smoking recluse who ruled for 17 years after coming to power in July 1994 and resisted opening up to the outside world in order to protect his regime. The potential succession of his little-known third son, Kim Jong Un, threatens to trigger a dangerous period for the Korean peninsula, where 1.7 million troops from the two Koreas and the U.S. square off every day. “Kim Jong Il inherited a genius for playing the weak hand and by keeping the major powers nervous, continuing his father’s tradition of turning Korea’s history of subservience on its head,” said Michael Breen, the Seoul-based author of “Kim Jong Il: North Korea’s Dear Leader,” a biography. “We have entered an uncertain moment with North Korea.” Lampooned by foreign cartoonists and filmmakers for his weight, his zippered jumpsuits, his aviator sunglasses and his bouffant hairdo, Kim cut a more serious figure in his rare dealings with world leaders outside the Communist bloc. o snap! so far homefront is on point. |

I say it is a good thing we got out of Iraq when we did. His son is crazier than he is and is itching to go to war with South Korea. Also: Here is a blog dedicated to him. |

I think North Korea just got a whole lot more dangerous. If I remember correctly the progressive son did not inherit the leadership. Interesting times ahead indeed. |

I'm hopeful that the next leader will not be as insane as the "dear leader" was. I remember watching a documentary a few years ago about North Korea. The basic premise was that an eye doctor went there on a humanitarian mission to treat thousands of north korean's. I remember one scene where a north korean was treated for near blindness. The first thing she did after regaining sight was praise the dear leader, instead of a thank you to the western doctor. I really couldn't tell from that documentary whether the people are scared of speaking out, or after so many years are just totally brainwashed and don't know any better. |

Isn't really anymore dangerous. The two elder sons didn't get the leadership cause there not quiet as **** crazy as the youngest. Hell the middle one lost his right because he wore pink and snuck off to disney land. Something like that. As silly as that sounds his father was a complete fruitcake you have to remember that. They might stir up some trouble just to show hes not to be **** with but i doubt it. Business as usual they'll sit up there and rot. |

Good. But just because one bad person dies doesn't mean their aren't thousands of others to take their place. |

I would like to see an uprising by the people in North Korea, similar to the ones in Libya and Egypt. I doubt there's a chance of that happening anytime soon though, since the people there probably have little or no access to social media to organize a meetup. |

And they are probably completely unaware of the world outside if they really were that isolated. |
