Quote: The Texas prison system on Thursday abolished the time-honored tradition of offering an opulent last meal to condemned inmates before their executions, saying they would get standard prison fare instead. "Enough is enough," state Senator John Whitmire wrote on Thursday to prison officials, prompting the move. "It is extremely inappropriate to give a person sentenced to death such a privilege. It's a privilege which the perpetrator did not provide to their victim." The letter was in apparent response to the dinner requested, but not eaten, by white supremacist Lawrence Brewer before he was put to death on Wednesday night for a notorious 1998 killing in which James Byrd Jr., a black man, was dragged behind a truck for several miles. Brewer requested an elaborate meal that included a triple-meat bacon cheeseburger, a meat-lover's pizza, a big bowl of okra with ketchup, a pound of barbecue, a half a loaf of bread, peanut butter fudge, a pint of ice cream and two chicken-fried steaks. When it arrived around 4 p.m. at Brewer's cell, he declined it all, telling prison officials he was not hungry. Whitmire, who chairs the Texas Senate Committee on Criminal Justice, threatened legislation if the prison system did not end the practice, which rarely results in the inmate getting exactly what is requested anyway. Brad Livingston, executive director of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, replied that Whitmire's concerns were valid and the practice would halt immediately. The prisoners will be served "the same meal served to other offenders," Livingston's statement said. http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/09/ ... dUSTRE78M2U020110923 So question of the week. Should prisoners who are about to be executed be given a last meal that they request? Or be given frozen pizza? |

If you insist on murdering people you might as well go the whole 9 yards and not give them any sympathy. In fact you should really strip them naked, march them through the street letting people hurl rocks at them before nailing them up to a cross and leaving them out in the sun for a while. Same thing really. |

Don't feed 'em. They're going to be dead soon anyway. Not like the food will do them any good. Wonder how much money that saves? A little harsh, creepy. I wouldn't go that far. And you just can't either. That's why the 8th Amendment exists, aka prohibits cruel and unusual punishment. Pretty sure what you described fits both criteria. ![]() |

Same thing really. The whole "nailing them up to a cross" would provoke some anger from Catholics because they may take it as the government wants to make the convict look like Jesus Christ or something... Plus lots of people wouldn't like to see such a horrid scene. But to answer Trekkie's question, yes, I do think that they should get one last meal that they can choose so long as it doesn't cost more than maybe $50 dollars or so. The US has only executed 1,270 people in the past 25 years (that's the number I found), so the financial burden on the government shouldn't be too high. |

If they want to keep the death penalty, they should do this: http://graphjam.memebase.com/2011/09/25 ... o-scare-me-to-death/ |

Looks like Senator Whitmire is more offended by the inmate not eating the meal than having to provide it. Way to let him get to you Senator. You *cough* showed him. |

Where was the last meal for the innocent victims of the murderers on death row? We spend way too much money these days providing prisoners with room and board, not to mention free health care and cable tv. Forget about giving them a last meal. What I would actually like to see is the type of scenario portrayed in the movie “Escape from New York”. Put all criminals who are in for life, or on death row, on a secure island somewhere, and let them fend for themselves. The only cost involved would be making sure you have security patrolling the waters for escapees, and making sure there were plenty of hungry sharks in the waters. |

The man got two chicken fried steaks, a triple-meat bacon cheeseburger, a large bowl of fried okra, a pound of barbecue, three fajitas, a meat lover's pizza, a pint of ice cream, and a slab of peanut butter fudge with crushed peanuts and didn't eat it. That would kind of make me angry too. Regardless I think they do deserve a meal if it's reasonable. |

And if there was doubt of the guilt, why the **** are you murdering them in the first place? But I am so mad that now the executioners can commit homicide - oops but it's legal - hunt humans without class. jk But really, white supremacists don't deserve food... or air. |

****, you guys are cold. Should we also hang them up by shackles around their ankles and only let them down for one hour a night to eat their bread crumbs and water? We could also have people hired to be on watch 24/7 -- if any prisoner is about to fall asleep, they will be poked with sticks until it is certain that they are awake. A loud siren will go off on the hour, every hour, just in case the stick pokers fall asleep or miss one who fell asleep. I think that in all of our budget concerns, spending money on a last meal for death row inmates is very low on the list. We don't execute that many people, and if we could just get Texas to secede from the United States, the numbers would be much lower. thelion777 wrote: We spend way too much money these days providing prisoners with room and board, not to mention free health care and cable tv. Considering that we're locking them up against their will, I would say that the least we could do is ensure their health and shelter. |

It might sound cold but I couldn't care less about their free will. They lost that when they took it away from their victims. We are morally obligated to keeping them healthy and safe until they are executed but I don't see the point in catering to their needs. They should be made safe, not comfortable. Torture is out but so is cable TV. |

No. They don't deserve a special meal.. even if it's their last. I wouldn't want a last meal anyway. To avoid any *messes* though the chair has died. I wouldn't eat anything for the last few days alive.. but that's just me. I also support Prison gang violence.. so what? let them kill each other. (but that's a different topic all together) |

if you support gang violence, why bother with cells? just dump them into one big group and let them kill each other. If you are letting them kill each other, then you might as well execute everybody that comes through the gate. |

Hey you are in here for a few months for something inconsequential but that's the minimum penalty Harper put in place. Oh yeah, you just plead guilty despite being innocent because of overwhelming evidence against you to get a plea bargain. We hope you have a nice stay. By the way, we have lots of gang violence, have fun being killed by our inmates. |
