It's a good news/bad news situation for believers in the 2012 Mayan apocalypse. The good news is that the Mayan "Long Count" calendar may not end on Dec. 21, 2012 (and, by extension, the world may not end along with it). The bad news for prophecy believers? If the calendar doesn't end in December 2012, no one knows when it actually will - or if it has already.

A new critique, published as a chapter in the new textbook "Calendars and Years II: Astronomy and Time in the Ancient and Medieval World" (Oxbow Books, 2010), argues that the accepted conversions of dates from Mayan to the modern calendar may be off by as much as 50 or 100 years. That would throw the supposed and overhyped 2012 apocalypse off by decades and cast into doubt the dates of historical Mayan events. (The doomsday worries are based on the fact that the Mayan calendar ends in 2012, much as our year ends on Dec. 31.)

I read somewhere that the mayans didn't have a leap year, so could the end of the calendar have already happened just because of this?

Haha I thought it was just me feeling that way.

Ontopic: We will all go when the time is right. We all have a set destiny and this changes nothing. We could get hit by a meteor on that date and people would blame the mayian calander.

People just like to clip on a story to impending doom to make It more interesting.

I like that he doesn't capitalize, because he also doesn't quote. It makes it easier for me to tell what Trekster's reply is! :D

Meh, never bought into the original version. The Earth's still got about 500 million years before the sun increases in power enough to evaporate the oceans (creating a second Venus). However, that's no guarantee that we won't have already killed ourselves off with nuclear weapons by then.

A new survey or some such crap came out the other week saying the earth wont be able to support the population come 2030 or so. Just to many people about. So we're going to be in pretty ******* shape by about 2050 anyway.

On the other hand if China continues ***** the rest of the world off perhaps we could cut there billion in half. Did i just suggest murdering half a billion people? Perhaps I'm related to Hitler somewhere down the line.

I don't think ideologies are passed down through genetic material, but I've been wrong before. xD

Anyways, I never really gave the Mayan calendar any credence anyway. The whole thing was just superstition to me. I'm more worried about the population boom than anything else. Maybe we should reintroduce small pox or the bubonic plague? Some people will become immune and the rest...well? Ok, terrible idea as well, but I can't help but think what we could do that wouldn't be harsh to cut back the population if we really had to.
