Guess who is coming to my home town and college? Westboro Baptist Church!!!

I don't know exactly why they are up here in the Northwest rather than somewhere closer to Kansas, but whatever. Everything was fine and dandy knowing they weren't near my home. But not that I know they are coming here, it kind of ticks me off and puts a bad taste in my mouth.

Needless to say, I don't agree with these people at all and believe that the type of religion they practice and preach is quite absurd if not grossly deplorable. I'll give them free speech, sure, but the way they are using it is totally inappropriate and very sad in my mind.

I'll just have to bite my tongue and just bear with it. Though it's only a local matter, there seems to be something especially sinister about how they are conducting this protest. They are visiting my college, a few other colleges and schools, and religious institutions. The kicker is that almost all these places are private Catholic/Christian schools. Nothing wrong with that picture.

Anyways, my school doesn't want anyone or any club to protest and rightly so. It is a matter of a first amendment issue, not to mention that fact that if anything goes down the school will have a massive lawsuit on there hands which they could probably afford, but it something no one or no place wants to go through. So, like I said, all the students will have to bite their tongues on this one and just abide while these people run around preaching (and excuse the language) garbage and BS. Any thoughts you guys might have on this? Again, I know it's a local issue, but it should be frustrating to any American especially as well to anyone who doesn't agree with their views (and if you don't understand their views, check Wikipedia; checking out their main/home page is tantamount to supporting them :/ ).

Update: After posting this, I was doing a little looking into the Westboro Baptist Church and happenings around theme. Today, (Wednesday) the U.S. Supreme Court will be hearing a case against them and their "first amendment" rights. Probably won't change the fact they are coming here, but hopefully, the court will find that their "free speech" isn't suitable or respectful in some way and stop this awful things from continuing.

GOD HATES WESTBORO ******* CHURCH

You need a sign that says that. And a lot of friends who do too, then walk near their protest.

I read an article about these people in Time a couple of weeks ago. The only thing that I can really say about it is that it's absolutely disgusting. The bad thing about free speech is that it can be bent to protect people like them.

If I were you, I wouldn't go that day if I couldn't protest it. I wouldn't want to listen to a bunch of mindless idiots for a few hours when I could be sleeping.

Yes, the best (and most enjoyable and hilarious) way is to do a counter-protest.

The one at comic-con or something had some of the most creative signs.

ok, I looked up these nut-jobs on wikipedia, and I must say I am shocked and appalled at their disgraceful, disrespectful, rude, insensitive, extremist, racist, and downright outrageous behavior. I myself am a Cristian and can't support or condone what they have done and what they are doing.
If I were you, I'd do what this college did:

On April 10, 2008, a 6-person representation from the Phelps group picketed at the University of Wisconsin–Stout in Menomonie, Wisconsin—only 15 minutes into their scheduled 1 hour picket, the group retreated from the campus with a crowd of nearly one thousand students marching behind them shouting "go home, go home." According to the group's primary website, the picket was spurred by a recent house fire that occurred in Menomonie killing 3 students. The deaths were labeled as "fires sent by God" by the group who claimed that parents were to blame for "teaching them to be ****** and *******".

Just tell their radical hate group to "GO HOME!". If I ever found them, that's what I'd do.

It's actually only a half hour. :| They are going to hit up a bunch of places in the area. Some colleges, a high school, and even a Jewish Synagogue. That's not all, but it gives you an idea that they are trying to **** off a lot of people.

Counter-protest and get their asses off your campus and out of town.

Here's the article from Time: http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,2024062,00.html
It's about them picketing at a soldier's funeral with signs like "Thank God for dead soldiers" and "God hates the USA", and the guy's father suing them.
Also, why it's still legal: http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,2022220,00.html

I've been to baptist churches before. but when i moved to aus, i stopped going to church altogether. Can they honestly call themselves a functioning church. A church congregation wouldnt do things like this. This sounds like a Extremist congregation, not a congregation. These people are bad news. I'd stay clear. Also, do they even have the right to go to a school and do this. PTA boards should have more say in things like this.

If i was picked for jury duty and i was over there, i wouldn't hesitate to vote against what they want to do

The general idea is to stay clear.

They can't hurt you, and it's not bad to have some fun with it too.

Again, the problem with counter-protesting is very touchy. Really what these people are doing is looking for a fight. Say someone from the crowd konks one of them on the head. $1 million lawsuit. If you don't have all your people in line and knowing what your doing, it's a somewhat dangerous move. Also, with the "Go Home" thing, free speech is free speech. They can say what they want, where they want meeting certain conditions. As long as they don't break any laws, they can say practically w/e the hell they want. I just hope the Supreme court does something about it this week or this month.

I think the Baptist church excommunicated them. It's essentially a guy, his wife, their 13 kids, and their kids. They're beyond extremist.

Nice video, Earth
