Post subject:  Shoot Me Now.

So for the past couple weeks my computer has been freezing up sometimes, and the internet doesn't work sometimes either.

Well, it's an off and on thing, and I've just been dealing with it, but today I asked my dad to take a look at my computer.

Well you know what he did?

He erased EVERYTHING off my computer back to its original state. He didn't have to do that! God **** dammit.

ALL of my music, my pictures, my memories, my school work - EVERYTHING is gone.

I'm crying >_< God. It's just like everything that meant anything to me I saved. I can never get back the pictures of me and my friends.

God dammit my dad's an *******. He just came downstairs and said to me "Well the good news is your computer is working again. The bad news is everything is erased." And walked out.

****

My dad can be a bit like that at times. Which is why I never let him near my computer.

Sorry to hear about that though. I've had to format several times because of viruses and lost files and stuff. It's so annoying.

Thanks guys.

I'm feeling a little better.

I just remembered my friend knows a way to get music off an ipod to the computer, so maybe I'm not totally ****.

Still, I'm just really ***** about all the pictures I lost. I liked to go back and look at the ones from years ago and see how much everyone has changed, relive old memories, and get some laughs.

But yeah, never leaving my dad alone with my computer again.

I know how you feel TRUST ME. I've had everything erased about 5 times due to the blue screen of death.

External Harddrives.

My bro and I bought a 500gig off of http://newegg.com for less than $90.

I suggest looking on there or posting in Tech Talk for help finding a 500gig-1 terabyte external hard drive.

Once you have one, password protect it and then back up all the data you want to keep.

Unfortunately this won't return your lost pictures, but it will keep them safe from your dad(unless he's a hacker).

If you have (or rather when you have) any really, really important files, you could buy a 32gig (or possibly 64gig by now) flash drive (they're about 3inches long) and then hide it in a special box or something.

Thankfully I and my bro are the 'Techies' in our house (and pretty much neighborhood) so our father couldn't do that.

Are you on a network with other computers, like your sibs/mother/father?

If you are, then your dad could've moved the files to another computer while he reformatted it.

Nevertheless, he should've asked you. It was wrong of him to do that. Unfortunately we can't change it.

Had a friend screw himself over by doing the same thing. He couldn't boot, so he got his install disks and ran them. Think he thought they would repair the HD / system files, but that didn't work out so well. No backups of the past 2+ years...He's in the process of getting a new HD as well.

Definately backup at least one per month. I backup my important files on two separate external hard drives, and hopefully I'll never need to use them for restoring data.

Yeah you need to back up all your important files. Never know what could happen.

I loose touch with people, then find terrible stories before hearing it from them :(

I'm truley sorry your dad's so ignorant Sharon. Hopefully nothing major like this happens in the future. Reminds me I should back up a few things ... but anyway, life goes on. And no I won't shoot you :P

I've had to re-install my system so many times my files are on thumb drives, memory sticks and all that  That's too bad about your computer though... my dad is an ICT CEO so he knows what he's doing and I learn how to take care it myself :D

If your willing to spend a bit of cash, you can find somewhere/someone/a company that will do data recovery from hard disks (which needs a computer with special software). What happens is when you erase something, there is still a faint trace of it left behind. Data recovery searches your whole hard disk and recovers just about everything you've ever had on that disk. It's really neat ^^

Even if you've reformatted the disk, the files will still be recoverable because you need special software to delete the data 7 times before it's gone forever

XD

That's funny. Exact thing I'd go and do. XD You DID want the problem solved after all, sometimes there is no other solution.
